I'm a ceremonial magician but the same logic should apply to your Craft. Magic can absolutely be helpful. I believe that the best way to 'sidestep' the free will issue entirely is to first remember that most people don't use magic to obtain love, and it's because it isn't necessary. I know it's cheesy, but the truth is that the Divine is constantly trying to give you opportunities to give and receive love. The challenge is that you have to believe you're worthy of it, which I think is an issue of self-esteem and connection to the Divine/source of love. I think magic can definitely be used to 'expedite' the kind of spiritual development that results in better self esteem and connection to the Source.
