Esoteric knowledge can easily become mental illness if you reveal it to exoteric world because masses won't understand it.
If they do it's not esoteric but only secret.

It's my opinion that the occult is not hidden as a secret (now that you don't get burnt at the stake in most countries), it is hidden as a consequence of magic being something you have to experience.
Plus, of course, any spell you reveal to anyone before it completes, is then capable of being affected by that person, and their contribution is unlikely to be helpful.
