I’m going to start building a relationship with Hermes as psychopomp, his chthonic aspect, to aid in necromantic work.

My question is regarding suitable timings, whether astrological or lunar. Does anyone know if there any particular astrological timings best suited for Hermes Chthonios? I use planetary days/hours to work with the classical planet/gods/spirits but I am wondering whether using lunar timings would be more appropriate in this instance; thinking invocation on the new moon would be a better choice?

Feels like a better option for his more liminal aspect, what are people’s thoughts?

I am a new devotee of Hermes, I believe him to have been in my life for quite awhile yet it wasn't until this year that I have fully associated him to the call I've always felt.

Recently I have come to know that Wednesday is a day commonly associated with him; yet he seems to have a greater connection to me during the night time.
With the Greeks naming the day: ἡμέρα Ἑρμοῦ or hēméra Hermoû and Romans naming the day: diēs Mercuriī in Latin.

As for lunar timings new moon would be perfect, with my recent work I have been in contact with the Three-formed Goddess Hekate, who is classically associated with the moon; Spells invoking her seem to have the best effect at the night of a full moon. I know these two are closely related because I was made aware of their presence at about the same time.

The important thing here is what you feel is right, if the Gods are leading you to a certain path or you feel an otherwise unknown tug it is best to follow because you'll have no clue where it may take you what wonders you may witness

I think you could definitely do both, like a nighttime hour of Mercury on a Wednesday during a waning or new moon. Could also experiment calling him during a Mercury cazimi (within 1 degree of the sun), considering associations with the Sun as a psychopomp who travels to the underworld every night.

You might also consider using astrological House placements as supplemental. In this case you can work directly with the planet Mercury in relation to the God Hermes in Chthonian aspect if it is in a certain House based on the time of day or night. The 2nd, 4th and 8th Houses have Cthonian associations. 2 and 4 are both nocturnal and more directly associated with the Underworld in Hellenistic astrology. The 8th is more closely tied to death itself, though it is a diurnal house - it is considered "inactive" or dark like a tomb because it can't "see" the light of the Ascendant.

It just occurred to me that in terms of the psychopomp aspect desired, the 1st House is the Joy of Mercury, where the rising sign and Ascendant are placed. The 7th House is like the opposite, so also having psychopomp associations. Combinations here and there might prove auspicious.
