Has anyone run across the term "hyperlexia" much? I mean dyslexia is as common as MAGA hats at a gun show. But latterly I ran across a gent in a novel who self-described himself as hyperlexic: highly intelligent, nearly eiditic memory, and a great sorter of data by category and number. But with a certain blindness to metaphorical description or use of idiom. Which brain-plumbing might hamstring one in discourse with those whose mental toilets flush down other pipes.

So essentially the polar opposite of you?

I was hyperlexic as a child. There's different types. Its someone who learned to read at a higher level then most sometimes even teaching themselves to read at a young age. It's associated with autism and autism like traits. It can be a sign of disability because of this and often hyperlexics do not have good reading comprehension. After all just cuz you can read something doesn't mean you can understand it. There's also hypercalculia my autistic brother had that. It's hyperlexia but instead of reading it's math. He could do multiplication in kindergarden.

I actually was able to read at a college level in the third grade. I did however end up with decent reading comprehension and they tested me once as a child. I could read over 1000 words per a minute with a 70% to 80% accuracy in reading comprehension. I cannot do that now however and I struggle with reading these days due to adhd symptoms

Edit: another thing to add to go with this I was often hyperverbal as a child with speaking skills that rivaled my teachers. Thats common with hyperlexia. Sometimes I'd go nonverbal due to anxiety and it wasn't taken seriously. But the hyperverbalness which I still often have can trick people into thinking you are smarter and more mature then you are. This caused a lot of adults growing up to think I understood more than I did and treat me like a miniature adult which caused it's own issues. Even now as an adult due to how I speak people assume I'm smarter than I am.

Edit again: for some reason my link to hyperlexia and the different types wasn't correct and lead to something on the stages of puberty.

In fact, I am both. The authorities all agree that I am "highly bipolar."
