What kinds do you use, and what is the significance of each you use?
Myself, seems limited at the moment to the LBRP.

Depends on the purpose, I suppose. If we're talking about protection in the sense of preparing oneself and the space for work, I'd usually either recite Ayat al-Kursi along with performing wudu in the case of an explicitly Islamic talisman making, or demark a circle while reaffirming the purpose and power of the symbols and occult laws I'll be using for the work.

In the case of daily protection against the usual gunk of life, during my shower, I'll fill a small bowl or cup my hands to catch water and breathe over it words of protection before pouring it over my head and swishing a bit of it in my mouth. Eventually I'd like to acquire/make a bowl specially made for this purpose, but so far, it has done the job of keeping away unwanted influences well enough. And if we're talking about protection in the case of a direct attack, well, thankfully it never had to come to that, but there are a myriad of methods for such a thing so I don't worry about it either.

I know nothing about the first idea you mentioned, but like the second idea.
I'm looking into/researching wards and shields.
I know sea salt and black salt, along with re or cayenne pepper keeps some energies away. Perhaps symbolic garlic clove on a silver pentacle.
I sleep with a certain Key of Solomon figure hand drawn under my mattress to keep some witches away.
I have a family clan banner that I may charge as a shield, especially since it has a form of a shield.
Then there is an energetic blue bubble of protection, an LBRP, invoking pentagrams or hexagrams (i.e Mars, Saturn vs Jupiter and Uranus) detrimental to an enemy working.
Drawing a circle and one of protection along the inner courtyard (immediate dwelling or entire dwelling, the outer courtyard, the land outside, speaking psalms over it or other scripture, anointing an equal armed cross with anointing oil on mirrors, doors, windows, all walls, floor and ceiling, speaking psalms 91 and giving license to dismiss at every cross.
Basic wards, shields and the LBRP.

I have done this visualization daily in the past, which perhaps I shall have to resurrect and place in my daily ritual.

Sit in a chair facing North. Let the practitioner imagine that shoots/roots burst through the feet of the practitioner, and at high speed burrow through everything beneath it, until it merges with roots of vines outside, causing the effect of the vine covering you, trapping all energies as vines would strangle other plants growing in their space, trapped in the vine.
Let the practitioner then imagine themselves without pause being the eye of a tornado, repelling all energies up and away from the practitioner.
Let the practitioner now be underwater in the ocean depths as if a tsunami occurred, dragging all down into the water.
Let the practitioner be plunged immediately into the fire, arising as Spirit.

Now I dont know if this is a ward or shield, but daily was a good centering and grounding technique, with five element awareness.
