A lot of people consider me sort of "new age", but after going to ChatGPT and looking up the definition of Chaos Magic, I am not sure what the difference is between the two.

Is there an easy definition between new age & chaos magic? Just curious.

Thanks!

As far as I can tell...
New age is about light only and refuses darkness.
Chaos magic is about both light and dark.
Also, Chaos Magic is more of a metamagic system than New Age. I'm not sure New Age stuff encourages experimentation to the same degree as Chaos Magic does.

Also, you may need to take into account that ChatGPT is a lying POS. It's great at sounding plausible; not so good at being actually factual.

I don't think that New Age promotes experimenting. Those who do, are probably the teachers, but common newager probably doesn't really experiment much.

New Age requires jargon, Chaos Magic does not.

Chakras, Planes, Masters, Ascension, Vibration, Energy, Aliens, Grounding, Centering, Mindfulness, Astral Body, etc... The New Age movement depends on special words with special definitions that apply only to those New Age teachings.

Chaos Magic does not require any of that. You can use your regular language in the regular way to describe any aspect of it from the technical to the philosophical. And you will still find plenty of New Age elements in Chaos Magic literature, things like Gnosis, but you will also find bits of religion and fantasy dragged in as well, with Enochian or Voodoo or some other related system being co-opted.

Another big difference is that New Age almost always comes with a message and a plan. A plan for you, a plan for humanity, some kind of answer in which you are expected to believe. Chaos Magic does not, you make whatever you want out of it and it does not attempt to offer answers.

How could I forget that?

There is a vibe with New Age practices. Expensive crystals, designer wool shirts from Tibet, Shamans who channel alien councils to change your vibrations, etc. It's accessible and it can get pretty out there, but there is always a loose dogma and a lot of high-horsing on 'negative vibrations'. Generally speaking I avoid new-agers because most I've run into are delusional and uninteresting regurgitating husks.

Chaos Magic is based around a technological view of belief, a recognition that underlying all reality is a swirling void of chaos, and that there are no natural laws, only patterns that emerged from chaos. Dogma exists not to guide your actions, but to be used to fulfil certain goals with genuine belief. You pick Christ up when you want Love, then drop him for Buddha when you want equanimity, and then drop that for Merlin when you need to ride the dragon, and then embody Sun Wukong when you need to be mightier than the forces of Heaven. There's a large population of Chaos Magicians that believe in the validity of pop-culture icons as genuine idols, they see deities are just characters we hold in higher respect than ones from fiction.

Using Chat GPT to do your esoteric research is lazy and dangerous, at least use Wikipedia. The easiest option is hardly the best.

One of the fundamental differences is that NewAgers believe in a benevolent anthropocentric universe where everything will work out just fine provided you let nature run its course, where everything strives towards balance and harmony and will somehow conspire to grant them everlasting bliss in the end.

Chaos magic, on the other hand, recognizes the cosmic constant of „Shit happens“ without worrying about it, an unbearable thought to NewAgers for whom everything happens for a reason, and that reason is unfailingly in support of their own ‚spiritual development‘.

High magic recognizes the dualistic condition but does not care whether life is bittersweet or sweet and sour; rather it seeks to achieve any arbitrary perceptual perspective at will.“ (Peter J. Carroll, Liber Null & Psychonaut)

The NewAge wants life to be sweet at all cost, even if this means blanking out its unpleasant aspects, which makes its adherents frequently appear so otherworldly. NewAgers don’t like entropy; chaos magicians acknowledge it with a shrug.
