As someone who is autistic, i feel too hard when something requires shifting away from my 'regular mind state' to hold ritual or do magic. Usually I get stuck on all of the details, and focus too much to a point that i'm really not even trying to focus at all.

That said, I've had mixed results and never really found a consistently successful technique.

I'm interested in hearing about how others achieve entering a more receptive state (or however you would personally define it!).

try guided meditation and look into hypnosis. hypnosis has a lot of research and direct, practical methodology that can aid in putting you into the proper state. once you've had enough experience with hypnosis getting into the state you'll have a lot easier time going there at will.

Shifting your mind of state is something you train. After enough training, and it doesn't matter which technique you use, you can get a lot faster into that desired state, because it becomes a kind of "muscle memory". In that case it is a nervous system / energetic memory.

Things you can do to enhance that:
  • do it always in your "sacred place" where you perform magic, in your private spot in your house
  • and try to do that in a regular way at the same time every day
  • traditional techniques also use some sort of ritual, like drinking a substance which you only drink when you intent to perform magic. I prefer a special blend of green tea (I keep that also separated from my normal teas in order to not confuse that with them)

It is more ore less like programming your mind, when I do this or that in a certain order, then enter the matrix.

And regarding the method or exercise: it really depends on your personal choice. You can use normal meditation as @AbammonTheGreat already mentioned, or a more special form like a QiGong exercise (but a form you do only for your practice).

Honestly, I havent even figured out my preference yet. It can vary for me. However, I would recommend trying a one thing at a time. Starting with zen meditation would be my recommendation. There is also walking meditation.

I prefer standing meditation, like zhan zhuang. But I don't do that for this kind of work. It is more a preparatory meditation for the sitting meditation. You first energize your entire nervous system with zhan, then after that make a pause of 10 minutes and finally start the sitting meditation.
