What makes or breaks a ritual, in your opinion?

I have been contemplating about this one, log in to any occult forum and one question always goes like "did my ritual work/why didn't it work".

No one really knows for certain. This is magick, not chemistry, perhaps we are just deluded or so much happens in magick no one can put up a model that fits all.

There seem to be certain things one can do, however. I am gonna write it down below and you tell me what helped you also.

Increasing ones energy first and foremost: I don't like to use this term much, because it gets thrown a lot, and not much explanation given for it. Two sources helped me on this one, one being LIFE/VITAL FORCE and EMOTION.

About Vital Force, bigger caliber of round comes up with a bigger hole on the ground. Though you being on great condition physically helps, most crucial one seems to be raising it on subtler planes, at least for me.

To Focus: Pretty critical point, you don't want to have your mind going around in circles acting like a monkey when there is one clear goal you wanna direct your intent, willpower, and energy to. A laser does not act the same with a lamp, its more focused, cuts to the point. My experience has showed so far that one doesn't need a trance-like state, but a clear mind that is going with a single goal. Using emotion and sensations of body really helps on this, to direct everything you have towards the outcome.

If you have managed to do the first part, now is time to direct that attention to anything but the desired outcome. You are the closest target, and could fall into obsession about it, rather than it manifesting. That brings us to the final point.

Word what you want real clear: And also really want this thing. Finetuning is needed on this one, you really want to get this particular outcome, without being consumed by it. Magick does manifest in ways we can't predict so its a good caution one puts the condintions beforehand.

Say you want someone dead, do you really want it happen on some explosion that takes many lives, perhaps yours too included? Or perhaps you want wealth, then you have a work accident that grants you the wealth but now your legs ain't moving no longer. Extreme examples but should get the point across on it.

Can't think much other than this. Sometimes things just won't work. Perhaps the scope was too big. Perhaps additional work in physical realm was needed. Perhaps there are certain forces won't allow this certain outcome to happen. We can't be really sure.

This was strictly about low magick and like I told above shoot me what helped you.

When many people start using the same rune formula, its energetic charge can “dilute”. Imagine that a formula is like a reservoir of energy. If too many people draw from it at the same time without filling it back up, the energy is depleted. Answer: Do you have enough will/force/power (yours, a groups, an entities, combination of them) to overcome whatever the opposition/inertia is against the desired outcome.



Everything else (method, ritual design, tools, prep work, intent, belief/doubt, righteous anger, secrecy, correspondences, etc…) plays into and needs to be considered in the light of that.



Problem with and why magic seems haphazard is because we never know all of the factors. The most interesting (and infinitely frustrating) part of that is a lot of that stuff is unknowable except maybe in general/vague terms.



So we create these simple ways of thinking about and working magic. Which is also why new practitioners get so frustrated with more experienced practitioners and our imprecise rules-of-thumb.



If you really want to work magic, get comfortable with not knowing, paradoxes, and vague understandings that slip away the more you try to grasp them.



Real answer: Never give up. You may not know most of the equation but if you just keep really hammering away at it you will (usually) win in the end. Unstoppable force beats immovable object every time because neither of those things really exist (for the most part). So become the nearly-unstoppable force.

If you are new to rune magic, try formulas that you find on the Internet, but before you use it, make a diagnosis. Tarot or runes. Ask the cards or your other oracles a few questions.
