I use many private torrent trackers -- many exist for e-books. Personally, I use CGPeers.to for my own work.

I wanted to float the idea of moving to a Forum + Private Torrent Tracker structure, much like CGPersia and CGPeers works.

This way, books stay remain alive longer and the need for re-ups dissipates.

Happy to help, but just floating the idea to staff/members.

I prefer to stay away from torrents. Downloaded multiple viruses that way. Anyone who joins the pool of trackers might intentionaly (or not) spread viruses and malware.

Torrents have the upside of being p2p, but how about something like
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
where one can both read the book online and download the file if needed? I'm not sure if the auth can be integrated with the forum's auth, that would be a very seamless experience.

If the idea is interesting, I can help with the needed infrastructure (server, some 1-4 TB of storage) to get the ball rolling.

Morell, any file downloaded from the internet can be malicious, you should scan all files you download, regardless if they were downloaded via torrent.

Most of viruses I found were found on torrented files. I always scan files I download, it's a basic habit with online presence.

A private server for the library with access for the members only? I love that idea. Unlike torrent we would have control over the source files and their health.

The only problem I see would be possible liabilities for sharing copyrighted material, DMCA requests, etc. But is it much worse than sharing links to mega? (it might be).

If the administration sees this idea as too much of a liability, there's always the possibility to not link it directly to the forum (i.e.: no shared auth) and to serve it over tor.

Well, there are ways, but you are right that copyright is an issue. Owner of Mega Upload went to jail for his vision and application of free internet. I wonder how Anna's Archive is doing it.
