I figured a good question for controversy is this.
How do you feel about it. (Try to not be hateful, I know some of y'all are willingly possessed by a spirit that's old) Any objections any pros you can think of any cons? Lemme know in the comments

To quote John Constantine: "I'll tell you the ultimate secret of magic: any c**t can do it."

This is meant to be a positive remark BTW :)

Don’t care. Doesn’t matter. If you can drop all of your baggage before you enter the circle and master yourself, then it doesn’t make any difference (pro or con).

Quick ask my thoughts on people quietly practicing a closed practice they aren’t supposed to 😉

But seriously you do you.

pretty sure he meant cunt 😏

HEY ! I am possessed by a spirit that is old ! Not hateful of them at all . Why should I be . I would say anyone that ' hates ' them has their own issues to work through .

You got issues IMO if you dont see people as people first ... any gender orientation or lack of it, any age difference , any culture or ethnic difference comes after that . people that are haters , seem to put what they have an issue with ( like gender or ethnicity ) before the FACT that others are , primarily, people, just like they are .

I use to be a bit confused by it all - personally I have always come to terms with my particular 'mix of gender' - but change your body physically ??? Anyway, many years back , due to circumstances ( sitting next to someone in lectures ) I got to know a young guy that was in the beginning of transition , he seemed open about it so I asked about it ; he declared simply that it was his 'True Will' to experience both sexes in one incarnation . Hmmmmm ... being a Thelemite I accepted that ... as soon as I accepted his decision (as 'valid' ... according to my judgement :D ) I had no further questions , just accepted it . So we became more friendly after that .

I had an online friend that transitioned ... years back I used to talk to this guy about martial arts ... he disappeared .. then this 'new poster ' turned up ... cute looking woman . I started talking to her and I was 'something familiar about you '... she laughed and said ''I used to be .... and talked to you about martial arts .'' The posted pictures of 'him' ; US military , uniform and HUGE gun ... tough looking guy ... and now ... WOW what a difference . But over time long conversations were had where she offered up a whole lot of reasons and issues and causes ... these things ( mostly bad problems ) can put what is a radical solution in context . Many of her bad issues went away after transition . However , she lives in the US and after the recent turn of events there , she was feeling real fear and looking for an escape route . Also she often felt attacked or disrespected on that forum (not here , elsewhere ) so , on both fronts , she disappeared . :(

I feel like my username gives away my thoughts lol. Quite honestly, the people I have an issue with are the ones who try to exclude us from these practices (who are often the same people who try to exclude us from daily life).

From some sources I read it seems like the spirit is non dual in form, so a person being "trans" I don't see it as anything wrong, you can look at Enheduanna's hymn to Inanna who was a female in most cases but a male in others. Reading on Inanna/Ishtar it seems very clear there is a Venus and promethean archytype connection that possibly even extends to Babylonian, Canaanite (Halal ben Shachar) and finally Christianity (lvcifer) who they named the morning star/light bearer but turned evil due to that passage in isaiah, but that is like calling Icarus satan because he flew close to the sun. Supposed to be a lesson on discernment and temperance, church turned it into Satan due to the churches disconnect from spirit at the time. (pure spec on some of the things but the planet Venus can be seen as a planet stealing fire from the God's or the sun and thus it is burning. i.e. hell but it originally was the love, and ferocity of the human spirit from the soul. Love is universal and the ferocity in which we protect those we love and the diligence and passion in which we pursue our goals knows no gender.

It doesn’t really effect anyone or anything whatsoever when it comes to magic. To me that‘s irrelevant to one’s practices. It doesn‘t really matter. Unless idk, there’s some system that focuses on that in particular but more often than not they transcend any notions like that and focus on other things.

I’m a gay man. But that doesn’t really change the inner work, or even matter when it comes to [my] practices. We just get on with the Great Work and study and keep learning. The soul transcends human conception and categorization.

Good question to open up debate, though I notice all the replies so far (Ramsay, Eld, Firetree, Shade, Feywer) agree that gender doesn't affect anyone's practice or legitimacy. No one seems to hold the opposite position.

With all respect, I'm curious: did you have something specific in mind when framing it as a controversial topic? Any tradition or current where gender does play an operative role? Asking in good faith, there might be something interesting there worth discussing.

Kind of like asking if being trans affects one's ability to drive a car.

If someone's magic works, what the F do I care about their gender?

trans ppl are ppl, they can do whatever they want. unless you are a disgusting person full of hatred (not necessarily accusing anyone) then it shouldn't matter. live and let live

Myriad occult practices heavily emphasize the understanding and mastery of gender -- both the masculine and the feminine. It would seem to me that trans folks have a very rich perspective to bring into the conversation and, as others have rightfully stated: anyone can do it.

I say this in a very non-judgmental way, or at least to the best of my ability, magick is largely about finding the balance inside the circle, or the infernal union, as part of yourself, one side doesn't exist without the other, rather you are approaching this metaphysically as positive and negative energy or through perceptively challenged masculine and feminine perspective, you have some severe fundamental approach issues, being trans is not the problem, as long as you don't deny the opposing force as half of who you are, the problem is you are asking practitioners of a very independent and personal path based on personal experience and validation what we think of you practicing, you shouldn't care what we think of your "identity" I feel as though the potential for this question to spin out of control is counter productive, what is your reeal question?

I suppose the entities being called don't give a damn whether you have balls or a vulva, and as for initiatory paths, it would even be useful for getting to know yourself better

It all depends on what kind of occult practices we’re talking about. If we’re referring to those that are close to shamanism, then yes, gender doesn’t play a role here. Moreover, in some shamanic cultures, artificial transgenderism did exist. For example, male shamans could dress in women’s clothing during their rituals. Etc. If we are talking about practices where sexual energy is the main focus, such as Taoist alchemy or kundalini yoga, then for a person who has undergone gender reassignment, these practices will likely become inaccessible.

Holy f' what a question..

How do you feel about naturalized Canadians from Western Liechtenstein who studied veterinary oncology practicing the Arts? shrug

Anyway, queer and trans identities and cultures are complex and varied. Some attitudes may pose difficulties, while others can elevate the body into a living embodiment of the Baphomet, and the practicioner into the role of a liminal being. I won't go into details because what is meant as pure magical discussion can sometimes be taken out of context as verbal aggression or invalidation.

And as long as you have a brain, a spinal column and an endocrine system, I'd argue you can absoluely do whatever you want.
