There are methods, that change the soul.
There are methods by leaving body and when astral travelling possessing the animal and mind control it.
Moving into astral worlds and shapeshift there
Using illusion.

But physically, completely materialistically, like werewolves in the movies... no.

What kind of transformation into animal do you seek? And yes, there are dangers...

I had a dream I was a creature looking for a town to devour and wreak havoc. I was in a forest, I found deer like creature, I killed it but I did not eat it. I wanted to fly but I could not. So I climbed a tree and jumped from tree to tree violently, breaking some branches as I did, when I ran out of trees I jumped to the ground and the forest was thinning, I felt my search coming to its reward, I heard cars and saw headlights. At last a town with humans! To kill! But when I attempted to cross the road I woke up. It was the most unsatisfying feeling I’ve ever gotten in a dream.

There are witchcraft techniques that make it possible to isolate the astral body and condense it to such an extent that it is able to influence the physical world. For example, to kill a man. Dreams are symbolic, not literal. They tell you things about yourself through imagery...

Here is a different perspective ;

I have a friend , he is also fully indigenous ; a Bundgalung man , now an elder, a sacred site guardian and a 'clever man ' * he has 'gurarn' as his totem - ring-tailed possum .

Him and some others camp out at a special site , they allow visitors in to stay and learn . I had been there with him for several days on this occasion , on this particular day I was with him all morning , I noticed no extended absence, nor anything out of the usual , he didnt go quiet , into a trance , nothing detectable .

After lunch a woman who had been staying there gets back from the nearest town , about 70 km away . She tells us how she nearly ran over some possums , crossing the road .... in the middle of the day ! What are possums doing out like that, they are supposed to be nocturnal . She said she came so close to hitting them she nearly lost control of the car , swerved, went into the dirt , got control and back up onto the road ..... but the possums where alright .

Uncle ( the accepted term for such elders ) said '' Well, you were driving much to fast ... and you didnt even slow down when you got a warning ! '' She answered '' Oh no, I well slwed down after that scare and drove very slow the rest of the way .''

'' No , before that , you got a warning before the near accident , that mum had little ones following her and you could have run over them .''

'' What do you mean ?''

'' Didnt you see , just before that , another possum standing on the road side , upright with its hands up ?''

'' Well, yes ... I did see aother possum doing something on the roadside just before that ..... but how could you know that ?''

'' That possum was me , I'm 'slow down ya idiot there is a mum and babies crossing the road up ahead' ! ''

So it can happen 'in a way' - but it might not happen in the way that you ....... ' demand ' .

Flying? Like a bird? It’s the only way to fly
