One of my fav's I found this year, feelslike a time travelling funghi fueled old Wiz that was stuck
in a time loop in the middle ages, the 60s and settled in the 90s on his ol' computer.

And this one feels like a dark delirium of his apprentice that is too deep into dissociatives and deliriants.

Never heard of DS before but lots of great tracks on here, some relaxing, some a little eerie. It never ceases to amaze me how much music exists out there and that when you think you've heard it all, you can still come across a new genre.

It really got started with the evolution of the fantasy genre from tabletop and so on to games that were able to display graphics i guess. It was at quasi the same time the heavy metal scene and shortly after black metal emerged, which always loved to embrace occult and fantasy themes.

Dungeon Synth itself was as far as I know started exclusively by black metal musicians, mostly as their side projects. So the sound is mostly combination of the 8-bit or 90s production software type composition (midi-trackers) that nail the medieval/renaissance tone of tinkling notes (kind of embracing the limitations of it) and the lo-fi aesthetics of black metal, that is often produced to be muffled on purpose with tape distortion etc, to make it sound more mysterious- or like a tape that you could have found in the basement of a abandoned building.
It fits the image of a wiz in his crypt brewing something perfectly.

Luckily black metal is one of the music genres with the most albums being released daily, so dungeon synth slowly begins to follow in these footsteps.

That's fascinating. I would have never guessed black metal musicians would want to produce such mellow tracks.

There are times of brewing and reading forbidden texts and plotting, or even just growing closer to the nature spirits and old powers of before -
and there are the times of war and reminding the mundane what the odd forest dweller is capable of.

Welcome to the Crypt!

by DCCCVIII (a while ago i became aware of crypt hop, which is hip-hop-inspired dungeon synth)

I don't usually listen to hip-hop, but there are some great tracks in your post. Crypt-hop is a great term.
