My stepson is having a baby. (Actually, his wife is.) What're some good magick-derived baby names? I imagine I'll be tasked with sourcing the kid a foreign name. (Most Chinese try to have an "English" name, but it can be from any foreign country.) Trismegistus is out. Remember what befell in Tristam Shandy. I think Hekate would be cool for a girl. Ditto for Heidh or Gulveig. ("Heidh is Gulveig called when visiting houses/Far-scrying seeress in sorcery skilled/ Casts she her spells and betwitches she men's minds/ Wicked delight to worst women, she...") Boys? I could suggest "Egregore," but it's a bit wanting. I like Agrippa, but it smacks of Harry Potter. Aureolus (as in Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim) sounds great, but his mom would probably think I'm perving on her. Hroptatyr, maybe? Gungnir?

Fire away...

1. Some planetary name, or a day of the week with that name. (Saturday.)
2. The name of a star - maybe not Algol, or maybe Algol. Also constellations.
3. Cicero.

(I'm not good with baby names.)

Hermes.

Timeless, luxury, not obvious/obnoxiously occult.

Eve, Lilith, any Greek/norse god name. Even Crowley or Cromwell.

All absolutely foul, but still better than “Egregore” come the fuck on, I’ll have to come to china and mangle you myself if you ever name someone “Egregore”.

That’s like trying to pick a geographic name for a child and instead of picking “India”, “Milan”, etc you name them something like “City”.

Yeah, but it SOUNDS like a slight twist on "Gregory/Grigori/Gregor." You know, like POC mamas will call the kid "JaMarcus" or some such.

Got it! Eureka! No, the name's not "Eureka." The name. The boy's name is "Eldritch"! Eldritch Lovecraft Liu. Sounds WASPy, classy, and occult all in one.

Wait again. "Eldritch Lovecraft Liu" is TOO good for any just-bewhelped brat. A name like that has gotta be the moniker of an occult private-eye, whose series of adventures I gotta start writing now. The baby? BFD. Call 'im "Sulak." The Babylonian demon who hung out in the loo. Babies allus take dumps at inconvenient times and places. Me, I got lowbrow literature to fictionate and to monetize.

How about a rune name. Seems almost obvious for you?
Like Berkana for a girl, Keno for a boy, maybe Teiwaz for either one etc.

Zat's the problem: it's expected. I was looking for something seriously arcane or off-beat. Short of Pazuzu, mind you. Osiris-Aiwass might work, but that's a lot of sibilants. Still, this IS the Year of the Snake...

I prefer the ones that if you know you know if not then move along.

So instead of Crowley go Aleister, etc:
Dee
Cornelius
Johann
El
Nicholas
Levi
Simon
Soule

or better yet combine a couple of similar ones. Just try to go with something that people where you live can reasonably pronounce and at least guess at the spelling of.

Magus may be too on the nose 🤣 but Eldridge is available 😉

Got it! "Dee John"! Sounds gangstah, but with roots in the Enochian tradition. Maybe spell it DeeJohn.

D'Jean sounds classy. The Chinese labor under the charming delusion that French sounds "romantic." Mum 'n Pop can cheese out on D'Jean. Get down with DeeJohn. "He be DeeJohn, Hipin' 'n hoppin 'n E-nochin', Gimme a 'lap zirdo noco'..."

What are your thoughts on Renaissance-era European names? Also, when is the baby due? You could go for something that has an astrological correlation

Egregore is wild
