To begin with, one should discard the idea of 'black' magic. Simply put, magic is magic, and all these divisions seem somehow imposed. The same applies to the notion of some 'higher' and 'lower' magic. These relations, and this coloring, are a matter of our choices—what do we actually want? Some want power, some want to make themselves a deity, some want to 'survive' death, some want material benefits, some want enlightenment, etc. If we are clear on this, then we proceed to use the appropriate means and methods. Also, we begin to feel and think in a certain way. And over time, if we are persistent, initiation will come, some spirit, some force, a human or non-human, demon or not, will appear, and then we will be confirmed and accepted within a certain path that we can recognize later as 'black' or 'white' or whatever. Without initiation, we are nothing. And initiation is not something you apply for; it is recognized. Sometimes it is recognized only after it truly happens to us. We are not defined by what we think of ourselves, but the nature of our initiation is what defines us.
