I think that's a whole big portion of what magic is about. I kind of think magic can be a type of "glorified psychology". Our brains work best with understanding symbols and metaphor, so it is only suiting that magic is used to help balance our psychological makeup. The concept of the elements themselves allude to our own internal make-up.
Transformation is the name of the game, and I place a huge importance on self-improvement and growth. Magic is both external and internal. Insomuch as the internal is concerned, this is a large focus for many in the field. There are myriad books, essays, articles and the lot on how to approach your own psychology using magical energy. I groan whenever the phrase "what works for you!" is thrown around, but when it comes to person-hood, that's the name of the game. You have to find practices and techniques, a framework, that makes the most sense and resonates the deepest with your own background, upbringing, and orientation of the world.
I find doing simple spells and meditations can be the most effective. You don't need fancy pomp and drawn-out ritual in order change your outlook. But performing little things here and there can provide the necessary "fuel" to help change how you see the world, and be a potent motivator for a number of things.
