I was walking through a dense forest at dusk. The trees were tall and completely still, almost like they were made of stone. After a while I came to a circular clearing. In the center was a shallow pool of black water that reflected the sky perfectly, even though there were no stars above me.
Around the pool stood seven pillars carved with symbols I didn't recognize. As I got closer, I noticed a silver fox sitting beside one of them. It wasn't afraid of me. It just watched quietly, as if it had been waiting. Then an elderly man wearing a long grey cloak appeared on the opposite side of the water. His face was hidden in shadow. He raised one hand toward a bright star low on the horizon and said, "The path returns when the promise is spoken."
I remember feeling like those words were important, even though I didn't understand them.
The fox slowly walked around the pool and stopped in front of me. It tapped the ground twice with its paw. Immediately the air seemed to change. Every sound disappeared. No wind, no movement, nothing. The entire dream felt suspended, like time had paused.
The reflection in the water rippled once, and for a brief moment I saw what looked like a doorway beneath the surface. Just as I stepped toward it, everything dissolved into darkness. I woke up suddenly and looked at the clock. It read 4:04 a.m.
