What are some instances in your culture, practice, or religion where the elements are used for divination as a tool to connect to ancestral/religious spirits. The wind blowing in the trees, the movement of water, the images flames produce or the shapes made by thrown stones, etc can easily provide messages clearer than words on paper and for some cultures, it’s vital. How do the elements bring you closer to your spirits?

Water skrying is a divination method I've used multiple times in my practice to good effect. Candle/lamp divination as well, either through gazing into the flame or reading the shadows cast by the light.

I practice a bit of several methods of whatevermancy, but one story that sounds particularly relevant to your question: Once at hunting camp, I threw the paper towels leftover from the bacon grease in the fire to read our fortune for the hunt the next day. As the grease-soaked towel burnt, the patterns in the grease changed from two crows to a deer, so I told the novice hunter in our group "watch for two crows, when they come, a deer will shortly follow". He missed the deer, but told us the next day it happened just like that. Two crows, then a deer less than a minute later. Good times at deer camp.

This is a beautiful topic. In my path we view the elements not just as tools to predict the future but as the actual language the spirits use to communicate. Human words are limited but the elements are universal, for my practice fire and water are the two main bridges to the unseen.

With fire we use steady flame gazing. You focus on a candle or a traditional oil lamp until your physical eyes relax and your inner vision wakes up. The flame becomes a living mirror. When a room is empty the fire burns calm and steady. When an ancestor or a spirit steps into your space the flame will suddenly stretch high, dance wildly, or shift colors even if the windows are closed. You learn to read the mood and intent of the unseen guests just by watching how the fire breathes. We also burn specific resins and watch the smoke. If the smoke hangs heavy and refuses to rise the spirits are not ready to listen.

Water is for the deeper and heavier connections. We use still water in a dark bowl as a scrying surface to see what the logical mind misses. But more importantly we use natural moving water like rivers to wash away our own spiritual static. You cannot hear the quiet voices of the ancestors if your own energy is loud and cluttered. The water acts as a physical and energetic filter to make you a clear receiver.

Earth is the element of memory. Since ancestors rest in the earth we treat the soil itself as a living archive. We read the heavy or light feeling of the ground under our feet to know if a place is safe for spiritual work.

The elements bring me closer to the spirits because they completely bypass the human ego. The intellect will always try to guess or lie but a sudden shift in the wind or a snapping flame tells the absolute truth.
