Esoteric cinema, television, and comic books?

As far as esoteric films go, I've seen The Holy Mountain many times, as well as some of Jodorowsky's other films (La Cravate, Fando Y Lis, El Topo, Santa Sangre). I've seen some of Kenneth Anger's films including Lucifer Rising and Invocation of My Demon Brother. I've seen The Last Temptation of Christ and The Devils. I've also seen many horror films with occult/Satanic overtones; the usual suspects: Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, etc. The Color of Pomegranates is in my queue to watch soon.

I've also seen some anime with esoteric elements: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Madoka Magica, Berserk, Mononoke.

As for TV, I suppose Twin Peaks could be considered somewhat esoteric?

In terms of comic books, I have read Promethea, The Sandman, and The Invisibles.

Can anyone recommend more movies, tv series, and/or comics that could be considered esoteric/occult/magickal art?

Thanks?

Yuck, Christianity needs to be in the middle of everything, how did their horror trash like Exorcist become the norm? Next time someone will recommend the Nefarious.

If you love Chrystian horror, see Unholy, and The Cleansing Hour.
For Occult movies, if you like Lovecraft, then there is a huge list. I personally like quite new animated Batman: Doom that came to Gotham.

I'm big fan of black/white movies, 1930 till color... Especially vampiric topic. Son of Dracula is very good. Devil's Plaything is colored, it is also good, it has nice occult aspects, but it adult XXX movie.

I also approve first Dr. Strange movie.

And last thing, this would be better on Media section. Movies debates belong there.

Actually thinking about it, Psychonaut's field Manual also fits this category, its style is very comic and modern and has many of cool jokes, along with decent occult teachings.

I've seen The Holy Mountain too, quite interesting even though too macabre and obscene. Expected from that director.

Read the Hellblazer (John Constantine) comics from Vertigo as well. As for movies try Blueberry: The Renegade, Immortel, Ink (2009), Witching and bitching, The Ritual and As Above, So Below.

Recently I watched The Empty Man adapted from a comic, playing around the tulpa, form thought, theosophical stuff. It could have been better but it was fun.

Duplicate thread and wrong section. Merging with existing thread.
Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask the community two things:
  1. What are your absolute favourite occult, witchcraft, or magical movies/TV shows?
  2. Which shows do you feel come the closest to accurately depicting real occult practices, ritual magic, or esoteric themes compared to modern witchcraft/magical traditions?
I'd love to hear your thoughts on shows like Supernatural, Penny Dreadful e.t.c.

might sound like a funny choice, but I'll go with Star vs. forces of evil.
I love children's shows that are deep in lore; and this one hits the spot even better because it's whole gig is magic(k).

The Ninth Gate. Night of the Demon.

I enjoyed Sleepy Hollow until it inevitably turned into a soap opera.

Oh, and the one I recommend to everyone, The Lost Room.

Twin Peaks, The Craft (1996), The Devil's Advocate, Fallen, Stigmata and Se7en (though not really on magic), The Magicians.

Movies by Eggers (the new Nosferatu, very notably) are very realistic in the occult research at least. I’ve heard that Eggers is a practicing occultist himself but unsure if that’s true.

For me it would have to be sinners, I know its barely shown but how they kept to the originality of hoodoo and kept to the (ironically enough) roots of hoodoo was a breath of fresh air

Kenneth Anger: Lucifer Rising. (Well, I was 18 when I saw it first, so an experience)

I don't know about favorite, but I recently rewatched Beetlejuice which I had not seen since before I started my occult path, and it was surprising to see how much of it refers to real occult knowledge and practices, albeit with a fun twist, and isn't purely pulled out of Steven Spielberg's asshole.

This is an awesome discussion starter! Media representation of the occult varies so wildly, so looking at what actually gets the nuance right is a great angle.
