One of my favourite "macabre" horror fiction stories is the first four stories in The King in Yellow, a set of four interlinked short stories by Robert Chambers.

Recently I read Brian Barr's King in Yellow stories, which are also really good and satisfyingly macabre.

I also read James Blish's short story More Light, which is actually quite funny. In it, he actually gives us the script for the play The King in Yellow and even compares it to a kind of average/bland take on Poe's The Masque of the Red Death

I have many other beloved horror and occult fiction books and authors but will open this up to others on WF. What are some of your favourites?

I recently bought someone LMD's new fiction book. I'm a big fan of him as a non-fiction writer as he's very clear when explaining things, but am still waiting to hear whether his fiction is any good.

He's the GOAT (with a thousand young :p)

Have you read any of the other Weird Tales crowd? Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth, Robert E. Howard?
This goat is Niarthalotep! My favorite tale was Herbert West the Reanimator, A mad scientist trying to resurrect dead bodies! Yes August Derleth, The Mask of Cthulhu and The Path of Cthulhu, and Smith a book that i have led to a friend and never received back. Howard i have never read any but i think all similar style, they are amazing!

Re-reading it (in this case I'm actually listening to an audio book version).

IMO it's fan boyish and could be better.

Yeah, great story. All the films are hilarious as well.

Yeah, they are. Also William Miekle is quite fun if you want recent Lovecraft "fan fiction".

Yeah, I asked my friend and he said it was ok, like a fun romp, but he said LMD's non-fiction is a lot better.

The narrator's description of the nonlocality of self after death in Poe's Berenice is unique and philosophically insightful. This fragmentation is one of the most innovative ideas regarding the state between incarnations currently written making it one of the best stories written.
