Have you ever lost something small but valuable in your home?
Maybe you have placed it somewhere and one moment later it was gone.
And later when you have moved on, you discover it again in the most arbitrary place.
Recently I was cleaning up after a spell, when two crystal spikes, I just used, were nowhere to be found.
Later that day I found an old deck of cards I thought I lost a long time ago.
This reminded me a story I was told long ago...
While there are many mundaine reason for something like this to happen, I grew up believing an impish spirit called
the Schleich was responsible for this minor inconvenience.
A Schleich (German-Englisch: Sneak) is said to be a small, hairy, humanoid creature that excells at hiding.
It likes to live in warm homes, hiding under floor boards, in the space behind a wardrobe or in any small dark cracks.
Although of a quiet and peace loving nature, it loves to steal and hide little things around the household.
I was told I would never see a Schleich for they are far to sneaky.
But at night, when I would prentend to sleep, I could hear them searching the house, opening drawers and moving things around.
They embody the spirit of thievery and trade, never stealing something without giving another thing back in return.
Then they only steal things percieved to be valuable by the residents and "trade" back items that have lost their meaning to them.
This swap often happens without consent and is even mischievous at times. After a trade they hold on to the item and hide it from their owner.
When a Schleich lives in a home for a long time, their behaviour begins to resemble the energy left behind by former residents.
Becoming more peaceful or cruel as a result.
Described as neither good or evil at best, they also have some redeeming qualities.
As they try to keep their home clean of dangerous energy protecting them and you. For example by throwing out cursed or negatively charged objects.
When you live in peace with a Schleich they sometimes even help you find lost thing or in rare cases offer trades with item from previous residents.
On the other hand an angry Schleich causes a commotion at night, rummaging through drawers or throwing things around.
If a Schleich has a perticular problem with you, they would steal things like keys or medicine to drive you away from their home.
Has anyone ever had encounters with similar entities?
Have you heard similar stories about household spirits?
After further research I could not find a single result about Schleich in my search engine.
But I found a similar household spirit called the Domowoi.
The description matches that of a Schleich and their behaviour somewhat allign.
Since stories of the Schleich were only told within my family and our root go back so slavic/russian countries, there is a likely connection between them.
