I have been working on my Malkuth initiation for a few months now. I feel that I am close, but i do not want to assume im there without knowing for sure. As that would likely be dangerous.

Ive equated malkuth with having a solid foundation grounding. Therefore, basically having your shit in order in mundane reality. I do not believe you start there.
The mundane reality is properly chaotic, all foundations are fragile and ground is a floe of dirt on the bottomless ocean of magma - and I do mean this metaphorically as well. It's not a matter whether you have your shit together, it's really more about how soon will the world prove that you don't.

So would Malkuth therefore be the proper state of conciousness needed to navigate such a world in a meaningful way? (Ie, not letting the external effect the internal)

The internal is made of the external. I'm not sure what tradition are you exactly working with that would have you "complete" or "achieve" a sephiroth, so I don't exactly know what your goal is.

Maybe something like the ladder system, haSulam, I think

Hermeticism. However, my personal belief is that your internal state does not have to reflect the external reality around you. Therefore, you cannot always change your external reality, but you can change how you react to it.

I'm not exactly an expert on hermeticism, this is kind of a new one. I suppose you're attempting to meditate on each sephirah in order to understand them in ascending order...? You speak of initiation, what do you mean by that exactly?

Also, yeah, you can choose your reactions to the external reality, but I don't think it's the same thing as not letting the external affect the internal and neither of those is the same navigating the world.

Yeah, I get that, but what does "reaching" it really means? It's not exactly an innate structure within Kabbalah to ascend the Tree of Life, sephiroth are in the most bare-bones framing just features of the structure of divinity. What I'm asking is I guess: what kind of philosophy frames them as milestones to be acheived, and more interestingy why does it do so?

Great point ! '' if thou does not have a 'firm foundation' on what wil thou stand to direct the forces of the Universe ?''

Sorry to keep on with this but I think it is invaluable to the aspiring magician ( see below * ) ... for as well as building the foundation . all parts must be

IN BALANCE ...

In hermeticism ... 'hermetic kabbalah' does not just see them as ' features of the structure of divinity ' .

Traditional Kabbalah is not hermetic Kabbalah .

hopefully when these 'side issues' and 'questionings ' are resolved we can return to your question (in the title )

re , when you achieve malkuth ... however , I might suggest your 'third degree' is underway ;

Malkuth / Kingdom is connected to the Earth, both as element as well as planet (planetary connection of Earth being slightly more popular in New Age traditions).

Normally, one should have a great sense of grounding and also connection with physical reality, matter, and human experience. You should also feel the Shekinah, the in-dwelling divine presence.

So, did you really have those? Did you really reach Malkuth.

It is also important to take a look at which path have you done. Normally, since we are talking about the Sephiroth, I suppose you started out from Kether (Crown/Divine Impulse that started the creation of all the Cosmos and that contains Ein Sof - God's infinite wisdom that is mostly incomprehensible to the human mind). Or, alternatively, you have started with Chokmah as first since it represents the seed of an idea and intellect besides comprehensible wisdom.

If you didn't start from descending order (from Kether down to Malkuth), then the process is not done right. Rather, if you started from ascending order that would be more Qliphoth related than to Sephiroth working.

*Side note: The process of going down from Kether to Malkuth has a lot of ties to the Hermetic statement: "As Above, so Below. As Within, so Without". This can be further found in the Our Father prayer: "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven", and then also the sign of the Kabbalistic Cross that is performed (the magician visualizes pure light from above (Kether) and then directs the light down to his legs (Malkuth).

I view the kabbalah as a map of divine conciousness. You must ascend the tree and each level is a level of divine conciousness achieved. Not "becoming" but more like "uncovering" what was already there in the first place. The divine spark and the true will.
And on what @Nembra said. I am not framing it as a personal thing to achieve like a trophy or such. I simply view each level as a layer that was uncovered.

Presume no value judgment on my part. It is a truly inspired path, but I'm not sure anyone will be able to tell you whether you've reached a given sephirah since it is a rather personal interpretation of the system.

Thank you, this clears it up. I figured it would be up to personal interpretation. I just wanted to see what others thought of it

I thought your use of the system is valid , as I said hermetic kabbalah is different fro tradition which is very strict and specific and your teacher would probably be telling you what you should do . It is a personal interpretation so you assessment of yourself is a personal interpretation as well . However sometimes friends can help us generally, if they think we are loosing the plot .

You did mention 'solid foundation grounding ' Generally what is associated with Malkuth is this symbol ;

the-paths-from-malkuth.jpg

or something similar, what they have in common is the four square division relating to the elements and their correlation in yourself . So part of assessing that is if you have them in balance . Self assessment is difficult , that is why the magical diary is recommended and reviewing that diary ... its an exercise in trying to be 'subjectively objective '.

Balancing everything is crucial , hence the importance of documents like LIber Librae .

Another 'glyph' of the process I found helpful was this ;

4_of_Disks_Thoth_vdfa8l.jpg

Its a neat little map of the psyche . The interior courtyard is your 'sacred interior space ' , the towers of the four elements surround representing the external forces but also your Will and connection to spirit, your emotions and feelings, your mind and intellect and the vehicle of your physical body . The moat id like the extent of your 'shield' and protection . The drawbridge is a mechanism you operate to keep unwanted forces out and helpful ones in , unwanted ones are ones that disrupt your balance and grounding . It also signifies when it is right for you to'venture out into the world , or 'stay at home ' (practically and symbolically , wrong timing with that can also disrupt one's balance and grounding ,

As to the Disks, the heaviness of the symbol rather outweighs any considerations of its weakness. The card is called Power. It is the power which dominates and stabilizes everything, but manages its affairs more by negotiation, by pacific methods, than by any assertion of itself. It is Law, the Constitution, with no aggressive element.

The Four, Chesed, shows the establishment of the Universe in three dimensions, that is, below the Abyss. The generating idea is exhibited in its full material sense. The card is ruled by the Sun in Capricornus, the Sign in which he is reborn. The disks are very large and solid; the suggestion of the card is that of a fortress. This represents Law and Order, maintained by constant authority and vigilance. The disks themselves are square; revolution is very opposite to the card; and they contain the signs of the Four Elements. For all that, they revolve; defence is valid only when violently active. So far as it appears stationary, it is the “dead centre” of the engineer; and Capricornus is the point at which the Sun “turns again Northward''. The background is of deep azure, flecked yellow, suggesting a moat; but beyond this is a pattern of green and indigo to represent the guarded fields whose security is assured by the fortress.

In the Yi King, Sol in Capricornus is represented by the Second Hexagram, Khwan, which is the Female Principle. Compare the English word Queen, Anglo-Saxon Cwen, old Mercian Kwoen. Cognate are Icelandic Kvan, Gothic Kwens, woman. The Indo-Germanic type is g (w)eni and the Sanskrit root GwEN. Note also Cwm, coombe, and agnate words, meaning an enclosed valley, usually with water running from it. Womb—possibly a softened form?

Compare also the innumerable words, derived from the root Gas, Which imply an enclosed and fortified space. Case, castle, chest, cyst, chaste, incest and so on.

The primary radicle in all this class of words is the guttural. Observe the Hebrew attributions: Gimel, the moon; Cheth, Cancer, the house of the moon; Kaph, the Wheel; Qoph, the Moon, XVIII, Guttur, the throat. Sounds so made suggest the other throat; one is the channel of respiration and nutrition, the other of reproduction and elimination.

Why was the fire triangle replaced with the alchemical symbol of sulphur?

You reached it if you think you've reached it. Only you will know. No snark intended. I just think working through the Sefirot (and really Kabbalah in general) can be very ambiguous at times. No one else can guide you or confirm for you. I thought I had a reasonable handle on it, watched the 14 part Esoterica series on Jewish Mysticism, read some obscure Sefers, and completely changed my outlook. We are always adapting and changing.
