[Tutorial] Incense to stimulate visions

Informative post.
Fire and smoke are ancient allies: the right incense can become a key to crossing the threshold of clairvoyance. It is not just a scent: it is a bridge, a ritual that elevates consciousness and prepares the body and spirit for subtle perception.

For incense that stimulates inner vision, choose elements that purify and raise vibrations. Every herb, every resin, every essence holds an ancient power, a fragment of forgotten wisdom. To evoke clairvoyance, these are some of the most commonly used.

Artemisia
, the witch's herb, key to dreams and guardian of subtle worlds, opens the doors of perception and leads the mind beyond the boundaries of the visible.

Sandalwood
, sacred wood and aromatic resin, anchors thoughts and guides them into sacred space, among the whispers of the divine and subtle energies.

Lavender, delicate yet powerful, dissolves oppressive thoughts, calms emotions, and prepares the heart and soul to listen to hidden messages.

Laurel, a symbol of wisdom and prophecy since ancient times, brings visions and messages that would otherwise remain hidden, igniting the spark of clairvoyance and opening the mind to deeper insights.

Juniper
, protective and purifying, dispels stagnant energies and shadows, creating a safe space in which consciousness can expand.

Myrrh,
a precious and grounding resin, stabilizes the journey between the subtle worlds, allowing one to move into the unknown without losing touch with oneself.

Copal elevates the vibration, calls in the light, and amplifies every perception, transforming smoke into a bridge between the visible and invisible worlds.

Interesting! I just posted a couple of books (

and

) about incense making in the book share. Incense can be a complete spell in itself if made properly.

This is direct from the books system - a blend for Lucid Dreaming and Astral Work:
  • Mugwort (dried & powdered) — 40 % → the main lucid trigger and dream recall engine
  • Frankincense tears (powdered) — 25 % → clean clarity carrier so you stay conscious in the dream
  • Sandalwood — 20 % → gentle grounding anchor for safe return and strong memory
  • Damiana leaf — 15 % → smooth psychic expansion without fog

Here is another to stimulate visions Oracle Sight Blend
  • Mugwort (dried & powdered) – 45 % → the main visionary trigger and memory anchor
  • Star Anise (ground) – 25 % → sharp psychic “key” that opens channels fast
  • Frankincense tears (powdered) – 20 % → clean clarity carrier so visions stay readable
  • Eyebright (powdered) – 10 % → targeted “sight” support that sharpens inner vision without fog
Behaviour Profile:
Moderate volatility → quick but gentle opening
Clean projection → fills the space without overwhelming
Moderate persistence → holds the visionary state 30–45 min
Low sharpness → soft, focused clarity instead of intensity

Incense isn't going to do much of anything regarding altering your mood, or brain chemistry. Resins are the way to go. The reason incenses suck for this is because they have fillers in them, mostly saw dust and other garbage which, lets be honest, isnt going to do much of anything but make the room smell good.

If your rituals are flat, maybe switch to resins. Too much and you get headaches, too little and you wasted it. It takes way less than you think to get the chemical affect you want.

I personally think the key with resins for ritual use is to understand the WHY each was used. When we look beyond the smoke, and the 'this spirit prefers this smell' aspect, we see the chemical affect they have on the human brain. This part is where it gets cool. Then looking at how to blend resins, maybe add herbs, or a tiny amount of cannabis can really deepen the affect without getting you high (definitely not the intent).

The books I have seen fall short in a few areas. They either lean in too far into the chemical aspect, or tool far into the 'woo'. Sorting it all out is the challenge. Such an interesting topic.

The incense wont have fillers in them if you make your own.

True, but that is a throw away point. Incense will not have, and will never have the same affect on the brain (which is the entire point for ritual use).

I wasn't saying dont use incense, hell, use it if you want to. I was pointing out that learning the WHY of resins will get you further down the road. There is a reason resins were used way back in history and not incense.

Resins burned on charcoal discs release the actual compounds from the resin, which in turn alter mood (actual chemical reaction in the brain). That is the point. Incenses, even if you make your own have chemicals to control the burn rate (I mean its a commercial thing for quality and customer satisfaction) so you will only get a small fraction of those compounds, only minute amounts. Not enough to move the needle for much more than it smells nice.

Its just science and brain chemistry at that point. The really cool part is, this was known about in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
