There have been lots of experiments using psyedelic drugs for such a purpose. A case can be made that most cultures used them for such things actually.
Imo psychedelics are a fast track to the mental states that meditation, breathing exercises, etc bring you and that can be both a positive and negative thing.
First the positive.
Streamlined fast way to change brain wave length can certainly be a powerful tool to make certain types of praxis much more efficient. Even more powerful depending on your ability.
Negative
The work you put into the "slower" methods build understanding, character and ability. That may be lost when using short cuts.
Attained states may be much to powerful to control and may also paint a target on your back for things that would seek to take advantage of a person in over their heads.
There is something to say for experiencing g the whole of the journey, that tempers the individual in such a way that cannot be replaced or replicated.
If used in conjunction with tries and true methods, and also in moderation or while using a cultural context psychedelics can be a great tool in a person's magical toolbox.
I would also recommend using non synthetic or partial synthetic drugs for such a purpose.
Psilocybin, dmt, 5-meo-dmt, dpt relayed chemicals for the tryptamine family and Mescaline in the phenylalamine would be for the best. As well as incorporating the indigenous preparations and ritual in its ingestion especially at first. You can always build from there but having a tried and true context to work from will be very helpful.
