Anyone has had experience with the 22 Atu spirits? I would like to work with them, but there si no formal method. I am aware of Grant's work with the Tunnels of Set, but anyone knows of the formal ritual used for that?
Thanks.

You've hit on the exact reason why Liber 231 is considered so mysterious and intimidating! Crowley deliberately left it open-ended, and there is no single, universally accepted 'formal' ritual or instruction manual published by the A∴A∴ for it. It was designed to be an initiatory puzzle.

Because of this, modern practitioners usually approach the 22 Atu spirits (both the scales of the Genii and the Qliphothic watchers/Tunnels of Set described by Grant) using a few established practical methods:

  1. Sigil Meditation & Gaze: Drawing the specific sigil from Liber 231, placing it in your temple space, and using it as a visual focal point (yantra) while chanting the name of the spirit to enter a receptive trance state.
  2. Pathworking & Astral Projection: Instead of a complex ceremonial setup, many find success by using the corresponding Tarot key (Atu) as an astral gateway. You project through the card, step onto the path, and then call upon or seek out the specific Genius or guardian of that path as depicted in the Liber 231 sigils.
  3. The Grimoire Approach: Treating them like classic spirits establishing a formal circle, using standard banishing rituals (like the LBRP/Star Ruby), and then performing a structured invocation/evocation to question the spirit directly about its nature and the path it governs.
If you are diving into this, Grant’s Nightside of Eden is a fascinating map, but don't let the lack of a 'formal' ritual stop you. Start with simple pathworking and meditation on the sigils first to build a safe, gradual connection. It's much safer than trying to force a heavy ceremonial evocation right off the bat!

Have you experimented with basic pathworking or astral travel before, or are you hoping to find a more ceremonial temple setup?

There are also sexual methods to consider, specifically in relation to Grant's understanding. He showcases a lot of different traditions which he believes carries the essence of the Typhonian tradition as he sees it. But probably one of the most effective contact with the Tunnels via the Atus would probably be through "erotocomatose lucidity". If you are not familiar, this method involves total sexual exhaustion to produce a state of "near death" which leads to a visionary state. This could be incorporated with various ritual techniques of one's choosing.

Grant points to other methods, with his own twist, and he insists repeatedly that none of these are homosexual in nature. Repeatedly.
However, he did point to Michael Bertrieaux's insistence that any sexual visualizations should be as violent and disgusting as possible, and by this is meant through monopolar activities if one reads MB without Grant's filter. The idea here being that beautiful images cause seductive allurements that lead the magician into obsession or whatever.

For interesting sex partners that can be related to the Tunnels of Set, you can look at 777 Column CLXXXIII, which Grant refers too I think, but I also think I saw another section somewhere with "vampiric sylphs". But anyway, as an example, for Atu XIII, Death, The Path of Nun, you can find creatures such Stryges, Lamias and Witches (as inhuman creatures, not practictioners) and develop visualizations from there. The next column over relates these to the intestines, so as to augment the horror-hentai imagination.

There are also methods of the Temple of Ascending Flame, which seemed kind of fun, particularly in regards to the "Cave of Lillith" - but I have only read one document that I recall. Still, the sigils are a bit more elegant than Crowley's, being somewhat vaginal in nature.

Thank you, that is the information that I needed. Got a bit stuck on what Grant reserves for himself, but I guessed it was sex magick. My interest is working with the Genii first and later (much later) the quliphotic spirits. But all the Tunnels of Set material is kind of vague on purpose.
