What's your goal, by the way?

Emotional management in my mundane life and concentration in my magickal life. Learning to "tame the monkey mind" as you put it would seem to serve both of those goals. With this post I was hoping to learn a bit abut the different types of meditation, do a little bit of reading about several schools/styles and pick one. Basically, I'm trying to formalize a practice that's pointed toward a single goal.

Does anyone know what Monroe's Gateway Experiences is all about? Is that meditation?
oddly enough, I do those. In fact, they were my first attempt at what you might call a meditation program and the genesis of this entire thread. they're meant to be oriented toward out of body experiences, but they do introduce some techniques i've seen in the other styles i've toyed with. particularly they introduce several techniques that i use day to day. each meditation starts with imagining a large, heavy box that you put all of your mundane concerns into, which is something that i've adopted. there's also a part of the practice where you go to what they call a "focus state" by watching the breath while the guide counts you up to that state and walks you through some visualizations, which is all pretty bog standard, but the interesting part is that they teach you little phrases that are meant to be associated with that focus state and should allow you to invoke that feeling of relaxed concentration in your every day life without having to actually sit and do the visualizations every time. It kinda works, too, which is to say that obv actually sitting and doing the visualizations is more effective and reliable but when I start to feel overwhelmed just taking a deep breath and thinking "focus 10" really does bring me to some approximation of that state and help me calm down.
