Jazz Coleman in his Harlequin makeup, invoking Orpheus and the Gnostic Lucifer, the Light-Bringer.
In
Commedia dell'Arte only Harlequin can defeat Pantalone (Mr. Pants), the old, corrupt aristocracy and ossified systems of the world, and let the Lovers thrive.
"I use the mask as protection... because I know that it will send you mad - this energy of the harlequin madman or fool. The eleventh path on the tree of life, this energy - I know exactly what it is. And I know exactly what it does."
-- Jazz Coleman
The 11th Path connects Kether, the Divine Crown, to Chokmah, Wisdom. It "is" the path of The Fool and represents the terrifying, formless potential of pure Spirit before it enters structure. It is the holy madman.
Heath Ledger used this music video as his primary anchor for reinventing The Joker in
The Dark Knight, as a modern incarnation of the Harlequin/Trickster archetype. There is some speculation he did not keep distance from the archetypal energy, drove him mad, and killed him. But who knows for sure?
"While he was shooting The Dark Knight, he was listening to Hosannas and had my picture plastered everywhere in his caravan. He watched the Hosannas video, took my mannerisms, gait, and modelled his Joker on the rum-sodden Coleman of that period... I was overweight and fucking drunk and smashing things up and fucking going mental. He used that."
