I see new folks who are getting into spirit work and get paranoid about tools and what they need in order to contact an entity a lot of times. "Do I need the circle or can I use 'modern' methods?", "Do I need a ritual dagger or can I use my kitchen knife?".
Well, the first thing you need to realize is this:
You don't need anything besides yourself to call forth a spirit, all you need is inside you. Why? Let me explain it to you.
Everything is connected in the universe, everything is intertwined, and so are you connected to the world of the spirit. Simply thinking about a certain spirit will bring its attention into your reality. This is also how prayer works, this is why God(s) hear peoples prayers, because they are not sepperated entities outside of you, rather what you call God(s) is inside of you. You ARE god, you ARE the universe, everything is ONE, because everything was created by the same source and ultimately IS this same source. Everyone is an aspect, a part, a fraction of this same source who was given free will and hence a personality of own, and the sum of all the fractions and parts combined are the one source that is God, hence why God is inside of everyone, not outside. This is why the "Kingdom of God is inside of you", to quote Jesus here. Sepperation is only an illusion of the ego, because infact everything is connected and everything is one.

Everything that exists, is the result of ONE source which some call the allmighty God, who expressed all that is through his word and brought it into existence. Everything that exists is a part of God and an aspect / fraction of him with free will. For example: The planet Mercury who governs logic and intellect, is the intellectual and logical aspect of the creator who got a life of its own and free will. It's a way of the source to experience itself which means that everything that exists is a fraction of this one original source. Some are bigger fractions such as the 7 planetary gods (who are simply expressions of the the aspects of the original source with free will), others are smaller fractions like Angels and other spirits, and humans are part of this divine one as well. In fact, every human has a divine spark and is an aspect of the creator even if a smaller one. So everyone is part of God and hence a god himself, and everyone is part of this ONE great source. The sums of all parts of a system are 1, and so the sum of all creation is the one allmighty creative force. This is why you, yourself, are enough to call forth spirits. And this is why EVERY single human can have authority over spirits, be it celestial spirits or cthonic spirits. Because you are a part of God who has authority over all.
In that sense, both, the psychological model AND the independent model are true. Because yes, on the one hand spirits are independent beings with free will that have agendas on their own (although the higher beings such as the 7 planets, the Archangels etc are so extremly aligned with the will of God that they always act in alligiance with God).
On the other hand however, everything is connected, because the universe is one, and no sepparation exists. That means, you are one with all these spirits, you are a part of them, and they are a part of you. Just as God is not outside of you, but inside of you, so are the spirits not outside of you, but also inside of you. Thats also what "conquering your inner demons" means, because demons represent and govern dark and negatie aspects (jealousy, anger etc) that are all inside of you as well.
The ancient stories of good vs. evil, light vs. dark speak about this concept, except on a COSMIC scale and are supposed to be an example what every human has to do on a individual scale.

Now getting spirits to appear and follow your call (easier part) and actually comply with your requests (harder part) is a whole different story, and this is where tools come in handy.
When you employ 'modern' methods where through meditation you imagine yourself to be God, you are simply trying to connect to this divine spark inside you that makes you a part of God to gain authority over spirits, that is inherently inside of you anyways.
Grimoire traditions call these powers into you through tools and godnames and invocations, which makes it a lot easier to attain authority.
Grimoire tradition also uses the binding power of the planet Saturn to bind the spirits that you have called to your will, and it also works with the Archangels. There is more to it, but this is the essence of it.
Ofcourse, there are also rules to follow and a certain formality as you call forth powerful ancient beings. So you only have the divine authority, if you act in accordance to the divine cosmic laws. That means, don't be a dick kids.
