A lot of my practical practice revolves around psi constructs. In my experience, constructs, be they psi balls, thought forms, servitors etc. function similarly to trad magic but are more direct but less powerful. An example could be that I use a psi ball for rain(focusing on "bring the moisture here")and get a short shower that afternoon, or use a trad ritual/spell and get a good soaking a week later.
With that in mind, I work with servitors in a manner similar to how a lot of ritual magicians work with a chosen daemon. I get away from most of the hangups that come with spirits but have to work with noticeably less punch. I guess you can look at it like programming a robot vs. negotiating with a person to do a job. I will craft or purchase a focus ( a statue or something that matches my choice for how they will look) and then spend days or weeks making it as real as possible, feeding it parameters, personality, safeguards etc. . Then I talk to it...hang out...laugh, joke, cry and tell stories. I try to make it as real as my imaginary friend as a child...over time they can become shockingly present.
My first servitor was created when I was experiencing extreme depression after a nasty piece of shadow work some years ago. He was programmed to cast anti-depression, protection, cleansing and mood charms automatically when I was heading off a cliff and lacked the mental capacity to stop it...it worked VERY well...I still use him, his job role and abilities have expanded over the years and is now more akin to a familiar spirit. YMMV
