Woah I didn't know about Duerer's woodcuts. Melancolia is indeed incredible.
There's a novel online (at Booksie, I think) where "Melancholia" gets a whole chapter in what's basically an adventure yarn. Some say the odd "cube" is Duerer's attempt at a tridecagon"---a 13-sided solid. The book's title is, "Return to Whidbey."
