Hello, me and my wife have been experimenting with St.Johns Wort Red oil - mostly for its said health benefits. I have been looking into the history of it and was surprised to see that St.Johns Wort oil has been used as early as by the Scythians or Babylonians - This made me think about what uses it could have for spells and magick overall.

Do any of you guys use or have used St.Johns wort as a regular plant or it's red oil?

I have personally previously used it in the past in protection rituals. I’ve also seen that it has been use to make salves, although I have not yet tried that myself yet but I may have to add that to my to-do list! I just seen a recipe to make a muscle rub salve made with St. John’s Wort and cayenne pepper, so I may start with that first and see how it goes.

Sounds awesome! The red oil is very easy to make and very rewarding you just get a base of grape seed oil or castor oil then just during summer time collect as much St.johns wort flower (not the green parts) as you can , mix them in with the oil and let it stand in the sun for about 14 days - It creates a beautiful red oil and yes I can see how it could be used for protection rituals!

I will have to look into the red oil! I don’t think I’ve heard of that before, but it sounds interesting! I definitely want to work on infusing some oils, especially for making balms and salves, but I think it would also be great for making some ritual oils too. What do you use the red oil for?

The red oil is used medicinally for nerve pain (arthritis / muscle pain etc) - If you make it with food grade grape seed oil you can also take it as a supplement where it has lots of antioxidants and natural anti depressant effects which is mostly what St johns wort is known for as a supplement.

I use it primarily for my wife because she has a rare seizure disorder and six bulging discs so I use the oil to rub her feet and shoulders and it gives her a lot of relief which is definitely a miracle.

In magick I can definitely see it being connected to the sun and solar energies since it only grows during warm months and it requires a lot of sun for the oil to turn red but so far I haven't directly used it for any rituals. We live in northern Michigan so winter here takes forever until its warm enough to start harvesting St.Johns wort again!
