Here's what this reality could actually be about. To begin with let's first just assume that a spiritual reality exists. Mainstream materialist atheistic science and psychiatry are the gatekeepers of this reality and are there to try to prevent people from knowing about it. If you look around you though the world is incredibly fucked up and doesn't seem to make much sense. It could very well be that some sort of a malevolent godlike being which the Gnostics called the Demiurge and who is also known as Jehovah or Yahweh in the bible tricks or forces people to keep reincarnating here on Earth over and over again to farm people for energy.
It could be a lesser godlike being who wants to be the main one, like a Lucifer/Satan that probably really did exist at some point in history. It seperated itself from the energy of the source of creation and now has to vampire energy from other living beings and systems to survive.
The purpose might be to ascend higher and higher in the Matrix construct. The lower realms feed the higher realms, like the working poor supporting the super rich on Earth, or the Morlocks and the Eloi from H.G. Wells's book The Time Machine. Carl Jung said that a tree cannot reach to heaven if it doesn't have roots which extend down into hell. As above, so...below.
