al-Buni

Translated from the Arabic by Amina Inloes, PhD with commentary and illustrations by J.M. Hamade

The Sun of Knowledge (Shams al-Ma‘arif) is one of the most revered historical grimoires of the Arabic corpus. Feared by some, hallowed by others, it is one of the most famous – or infamous – books in the Arabic-speaking and Islamicate world. Written in Egypt in the thirteenth century by a Sufi mystic and mage of Algerian origin, the Shams presents the fundamentals of Arabic-Islamic occult work – from spiritual cosmology and astrology (including various particularly lunar magics) to working with spirits and jinn, magical employment of letters and numbers, and the occult applications of the Qur’an – thereby comprising a veritable encyclopedia of Islamicate magical wisdom and formulae. Images and descriptions of amulets and talismans adorn it. Numerous beautiful manuscripts of the Sun of Knowledge have survived, various of which have been used as a basis for this present work.

Never before published in English, this selected translation includes sections of the Sun of Knowledge on the mysteries of the letters, astrological timings, lunar mansions, the ancient Arab beliefs surrounding the stars, planetary matters, astronomy, the angels for and workings pertaining to the four seasons, summoning the jinn, the employment of the names of God for many and varied purposes, the construction of the famed ring of Solomon, and a miscellany of tried-and-true talismans. This selected translation takes a general approach to a much vaster text, and features illustrations, original artwork, and commentary to assist those unfamiliar with Islamic magic and culture. This edition is also ideal for any student of magic or the occult, classical Arabic astrology and astronomy, Islamic esotericism, or Sufism.

Thanks for your answer. It is a pity but I don't know Arabic.... ¡Ojalá I knew it!

This is on Anna's Archive if you feel like downloading it and resharing via Mega
If you mean "Shams al-Ma'arif al-Kubra The Sun of Knowledge" as shared on annas-archive.org: It is a wonky scan entirely in Arabic so even an automated translation is unlikely to work. Anyway, it's not the requested edition, pity.

Post amazon link and tag me when it's available on kindle. I'll get it if no one else gets to it first.

Warned: Off-topic
It is said this book is cursed and that doom befalls anyone who reads it. I am very interested in gaining knowledge about talismans from it but those rumours turn me off.

Like I said before, the best way to handle a curse is to not believe you are cursed, the belief that a book is cursed is what fuels a lot of curses and most are self-inflicted.

The best protection from curses is to just not believe that something is cursed. I've been "cursed" plenty of times, they did nothing because I didn't fall into their belief.

If I played into their paradigm where I believed that I was cursed, I would have bad luck occur because my subconscious would influence my actions.

Try to curse an athiest or skeptic. It's not going to work most of the time.

As it appears to be such a legendary book, why not open a separate discussion thread where everyone can participate? And this isn't the right section for discussing book curses and curses in general either. It's a pity when interesting comments are ignored because they appear in a less prominent sub-forum where nobody would expect them.

Dear WizardForms Members,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to kindly inquire about the status of a previously requested book “The Sun of Knowledge (Shams Al-Ma'arif): An Arabic Grimoire in Selected Translation English” we noticed it has been a topic of interest among several members in the past. We’re curious if there have been any updates regarding its availability or consideration. Your attention to this would be greatly appreciated, as it’s clearly a sought-after addition to our collection.

Best regards

Kindly use this existing request thread for such inquiries, your reply will move it automatically to the front of the queue, no need to open a new thread for the same book that's already been requested several times. Thank you.

I looked again and still only found the two Arabic versions on annas-archive.org; all other sites purporting to offer downloads of translation are virus-infested.

I'm new to the forum so forgive me if I'm not supposed to state this the following way...
But I happen to have a rough English translation of Shams Al Muarif (yes. The entire book.).
It was translated from a Spanish version and I could upload the pdf anytime if I had the permission and guidance regarding how to do so.

Also, I've read the actual book...
Amina Inloes' version leaves out a lot of the unique aspects of the book, and many old scanned arabic texts have certain...discrepancies in them.

Can I ask what you all are actually hoping to gain from Shams Al Muarif?
It's very overhyped by social media yk 😅

If you have an English translation, you could open a free account on mega.nz, upload it and share it in Book Shares. However, discussing the book's content, its efficacy, history, purpose and so on is not allowed in both Book Shares and Book Requests, you'll have to open a separate thread in Book Discussion and Reviews to that end. Anybody else here chipping in with an opinion on that book will receive an official Warning from now on, this charade has been going on too long already.

There already is a discussion thread btw (I suppose it's the same book, no idea - and don't use this thread to tell me I'm wrong either!):
