What determines the divine names uttered while/after tracing pentagrams in the LBRP?

For example in the Golden Dawn tradition LBRP the name YHVH is uttered while facing east and later invoking Raphael in the element of Air.

What is YHVH being associated with here? Is it the angel, the element, the cardinal direction, or a combination; and what is the logic, if there is any?

The reason I ask is that I've been reading Denning and Phillips Mysteria Magica of Aurum Solis, and they use a different order of divine names. (For example - fire is associated with the divine name ALHIM and air is associated with the divine name YHVH. I don't think this book actually specifies which 'cardinal direction' is associated with each element - and I've read some discussion that the decision depends somewhat on where you are. (For example if you have an Ocean to your West, then water in the west makes sense.)

If I can make a guess, I'd say that YHVH was considered a sky god, thus the Air attribution.

fire is associated with the divine name ALHIM

ALHIM is simply another way of writing Elohim (Aleph Lamed Heh Yod Mem) in Roman alphabet. Just figured I'd point that out since there's no fixed way to translate Hebrew. At first I didn't recognize ALHIM, but then it dawned on me! I'm more used to thinking of the word as Elohim. I do not believe it makes a difference whether you choose to use Elohim or Adonai for the South. Does it feel any different when you use one word instead of the other? As a Chicken Qabalist, I don't worry about it!

There is no fixed association between directions and magical elements. Use what your book suggests, if it feels right to you. For that matter, you could use Roman or Celtic deities in a LBRP, and probably achieve results based on repetition, vibration, visualization, etc. I've tried a few variations out of curiosity, if for no other reason than exercising self discipline to perform a daily set of relatively safe magical ritual and meditations.

Take that for what it's worth and hopefully someone with better knowledge will correct my mistakes! :D

In another thread there was talk about the Names. In LBRP it seems the Opposites are ruling. Adonai (from Adonai Haretz - Lord of Earth) rules over Fire.
Eh-Heh-Yeh (I Am - but in my mind related to an inhale and exhale) over Water. Agla (Atah Gebur Leolahm Amen - with the Gebur of Geburah / Mars / Fire) over Earth.
YHVH i am not sure.
Elohim in the South with Fire is used in the Watchtower ritual

It depends on the ritual, and the empowerment I guess.
What I mean, is that from Christophers book Kaballah, Magic, and the Great Work of Self-Transformation, you design the Enochian Earth Watchtower tablet, then a series of rituals ensues, including Invoking/Banishing the Four Powers of Earth, where it is in green, traced with ANONAI HA ARETZ, and a kerubic bull with ADONAI and a conjuration in each quarter for adoring adonai on behalf of the elementals I think.
The Supreme Ritual of the Pentagram uses different divine names, possibly different directions, and Enochian names as well.

The names of the gods (that interbred with humans) are very much cultural. I am not sure whether they are any more accurate than the usernames on this forum

Meanwhile:

Jewish Orthodox Bible

6 I have said, elohim ye are; and all of you are Bnei HaElyon.
7 But ye shall die like adam, and fall like one of the sarim (princes).

King James

6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

What then of the gods of the old times? Are they even still alive?

Even Anu/An/On, The Most High, was only a god of millions of years

I would stick to Thelemepedia and Open Source Order of the Golden Dawn for more information on the Pentagram, the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram, and the Supreme Ritual of the Pentagram, and how it ties into the Hexagrms and Zodiac.

There is a difference in directions, in some rituals, and one addresses specifically Cardinal directions, but I dont recall what or why. Sorry.
It is within the Golden Dawn, so I would start there. Im not sure if its predecessor, Theosophy dealt with it at all, but the Freemasons may have pentagram information for the esoteric application of it.
