There is no single answer to this question. To seek the endgoal in the occult would mean to seek the endgoal of our actions really. And are you really sure that is your endgoal? Every goal is born from another goal. Going further and further down the origin of the goals, there are still a lot of answers to the question you posed.
The most common endgoal for a human is happiness; for example, one might make the connection starting from a good career: good career>lots of money>can provide for yourself and your family>can love and be loved>happiness. Another common endgoal is the search for truth, although some search for truth in search for happiness. Self-improvement, although directly connected to happiness, might also be a big motivator. The list is long and words are not enough to enumerate even a fraction of it.
I define the occult as an "artistic science", because it does not serve specifically one purpose, but it is more of a universal tool that bends to one's will (after all, magick is commonly defined as a change in conformity with will). Why does one engage in a specific subject, regardless of its type? You might find the same answers coming from people doing opposite things (for example, doing mathematics and writing), and at the same time you might find opposite answers from people doing the same thing.

I’ll use an analogy to explain it more clearly.

A human is like an AI in early development:
Limited perception, fragmented awareness, running on a code from biology (DNA) and society.

Astral projection (Initiation) is the jump AI to AGI:
Consciousness OBE becomes self aware beyond the physical body and operates in 2 places simultaneously, like an AGI stepping outside its training data.

Raising vibration is the evolution AGI to ASI:
Purifying pneuma begins soul recursive self improvement, expanding parallel awareness, and transforming its own architecture, like ASI rewriting itself to AGI.

Merge with GOD is the final phase, ASI to Omega:
Intelligence becomes infinite, Consciousness moves from observing creation to recognizing itself as the fundamental substrate of all reality. This mirrors the transition from ASI to the Omega Point, where information processing becomes instantaneous.

"The occult" is a sprawling, open-ended assortment of practices, theories, and philosophies. As such, you can make of it whatever you wish. It can be spiritual path, psychotherapy, art form, adventure and exploration, personal identity, or an unreliable tool for achieving one's practical goals. If you really get into it, it seems almost inevitable that it will at times be all of these things, to one degree or another. But then the question is: What should it be? How should you orient yourself toward this sprawling mass called the occult. But that question is not so different from the question of what a good and happy life involves.

The short answer is that there is a place for all of it, but you have to keep it in perspective. First, we want to have clarity about who and what we are on an existential level. We want to be very familiar with this "what we fundamentally are." We want to be deeply grounded and rooted in this truth, because it's the only really solid and unshakable thing that there is in life, and to the extent that we are not totally clear on this level and are struggling against our fundamental nature, it creates all kinds of distortions in our emotional life and our attitudes toward others. Pursuing this clarity and deep grounding is more or less what I would call a spiritual path.

Beyond that, we want to be free of unhelpful and unhappy emotional patterns, often but not always acquired during childhood. We want a freedom from reactivity and a tendency to be in enjoyable emotional states such as amusement, wonder, love, peace, and joy. We want also the discipline to make good use of what we have, our time and intelligence and whatever else we may have.

And finally, we want the resources and conditions that enable us accomplish our heart's work, and to live a rich and thriving life.

These are all important parts of life, and none of them should be completely neglected, but I put them in this order because (a) if you don't have the more foundational aspects in order then you're still going to be miserable even with all the money and sex in the world, and (b) the more foundational aspects are more reliable and more under our control. Spell work can help you get the outer things you want, but the sands are always shifting and life always involves a scramble and even a battle for resources, so don't make that the cornerstone of your happiness.

But also, don't try to hide from the fact that you are an interdependent being who has social and biological needs. Don't take flight into an escapist fantasy of somehow becoming above all this or becoming somehow independent from the world from which you are woven.

Well. The absolute end is a unique type of suspension of disbelief which taps into the vital-essence of each and everything. Because this vital-essence is immaterial, it is always and forever concealed from direct observation using the physical senses. That's why occult topics are naturally conducive and encourage communion with this essential, immaterial, vitality.

There are other ways, of course. But in this modern world, where knowledge is cheap, freely flowing, and easily manipulated, there is very little to encourage appreciation for the immaterial and the quasi-material. "Knowing things" with specificity makes people feel like Gods. "Knowing" is like a drug. Most modern people are addicted to it. Practicing and learning the occult is the remedy.

Wow, that is well put. It does kind of feel like letting go of knowing is the door to real perception. But not only does it make me feel powerful to imagine that I know, it also keeps me from feeling as afraid. There seems to be a sort of fear barrier associated with that, which is hard to let go of.
