What is vampirism really?

I am asking here because I looked into the subforum "energy and vampirism" but I only find threads that speak about it in a very advanced way, probably already assuming you know the basics, and I can't really grasp what it is.
I am genuinely courious since I never heard about it and this is the first time I find it described as a magickal path. Since it is in the same family of energy work and from some threads I undestand it is about energy draining from people. But how? On real life or astral plane or what? With or without consent? What is the difference from taking energy from elements or trees or something else (i.e. pore breathing or breathing always)? Or maybe it is a defence strategy, to weak someone who is attacking you? Is there an ethical code or is it personal? Can someone explain it in a non ironical, very "vampirism for dummies" way?

Vampirism as an occult practice is fundamentally about taking the energy from other people. That is all there is to it.

Whether it is consensual or non-consensual, the specific kind of energy taken (vital vs sexual vs psychic), what it is used for, is down to the individual really. I don't believe it exists as a 'school' or 'tradition' in any comparable way, and thus it's fundamentally a personal practice. I have dabbled in sexual vampirism, mostly to enhance the effects of enchantment. Though, I'm not sure it's a true "magickal path", compared to just a tool or practice. Others might disagree, but I struggle to see how you could make a pathway genuinely focused around the practice, because it is rather simple at its root. Someone has energy you want, so you take it. That's it really. People really just love to elaborate and mythologise where it's not needed.

If you have ever seduced a man or woman, felt their desire towards you and enjoyed it, despite not desiring them as much, that is a kind of vampirism. If you have ever deliberately provoked someone into being angry or upset, and felt enjoyment from their emotions, that is a kind of vampirism. If you have ever drawn the attention of a room to yourself just to enjoy the spotlight, that is a kind of vampirism. They're rather crude forms, basic and unrefined, but forms nonetheless, and I think they paint a decent picture.

I have to agree with @Vonixa Tiresia on the practice of vampirism being taking energy. Practically you can call it in other words as being predator, leech or parasite.

There is also related path of the vampire, some people do take it as their path, seeking "dark enlightenment" or other goals.

And about the "Vampirism for dummies..." Seek for book Vampire's way for psychic self defense. Good, relatively safe taste of use of Vampirism. In library there is nice dose of literature on vampirism.

There are other archetypes which simply take in a predatory way and there is more to the archetype of the vampire than only imbibing energy. Those other qualities (consciousness surviving death, association with sensuality/sexuality, yearning, the aversion to mirrors, aristocracy, melancholy, affinity with animals, etc., etc.) need to be accounted for if a vampire is being distinguished from a thief of vitality.

The vampire archetype is receptive, it draws in. The archetype is inherently reclusive but places signals of wonder in the outer world in order to draw in (Dracula's castle is a good example of this). Once something has been drawn in, it can be "turned" (energy alchemy), taught (initiation), engaged in pleasure, or drained, but the option for more than the latter exists throughout the mythos.

The practice itself predates the Western archetype (e.g in the lesbian-tinged Carmilla) by a great deal, going back to the practice of sexual vampirism in Neidan (Chinese 'internal alchemy'), where someone has sex with a young person of the opposite sex to drain their qi and the corresponding yin/yang essence. It was supposed to grant youth, and when practiced enough, immortality. Did this form of vampirism have anything to do with "consciousness surviving death", "aversion to mirrors", "aristocracy", "melancholy", or "affinity with animals"? No, it did not. These are not fundamentals to the practice of vampirism, but to the archetype of the vampire, and the archetype is not necessary for the practice.

No, you're creating a false semantic division in order to support your own, earlier claim.

"Vampirism" as a discrete criminal category (drinking blood, where that it is illegal) comes from the borrowed root word "vampire". If this were a legal forum there would be an argument for making that distinction since lawyers in 2026 are unlikely to be talking about vampires. In every other usage, vampirism is "The collective facts or ideas associated with the supposed existence and habits of vampires" (OED, scan can be provided if necessary). Those "collective facts" include more than drinking blood alone. This is the definition which informs the literary mythos and the modern occult literature which the OP was asking about (unless I'm wrong and you are, in fact, asking about an obscure US legal point OP?)

Most coffee table books on vampirism include lots of these kinds of ancient precursors; sexual magic, blood offerings to gods, etc., etc. They're interesting. Remove the idea of a vampire being undead, not having affinity with animals, etc. and you end up with something interesting but it's not a vampire.

So it is not predatory? It is not clear to me if it is under consent or not, I know dracula but never really read the novel. You also speak about things, and not only people, that you draw in the "castle". It means also animals, objects, etc...?
And, last question, what happens to someone who is drained? Sorry for all this questions.
PS no, I did not want information about the legal side of vampirism. I understand what you mean with the archetype, you should probably resonate. Actually it reminded me a lot of Hades also.

I heard of the concept that a Vampyre is someone who has completed the Qlipothic Tree. The integration of the demonic energies result in a permanent change of the aetheric and astral body, you don't need to absorb others people energies concsiously and it happens automatically. But i don't know if this is an actual truth or some modern invention, since the concept of the Qlipoth isn't that old yet and we don't have primary sources for this subject, just writings of LHP practioners.

But the conscious absorption of others people lifeforce is a real thing as discussed in this thread. The german order Fraternitas Saturni writes about this, but they use the concept of Reichenbach's odic force.

@juji thanks for questioning about this topic, due to your question, I read some interesting things and opened my curiosity.

@Vonixa Tiresia , I found what you mentioned very fascinating, particularly about the ties of vampirism with alchemy and qi energy in Eastern Vampirism. Had no idea that vampirism was connected to alchemy, but now that I read that, it sort of makes sense this two fields are connected.

I went to search for the book you suggest, @Morell , but in the process I found others that my intuition thought more captivating, but I think your insight was also relevant and makes a simple analysis of what vampirism is and the principle behind it, clearly and objectively. Although @Wintruz insight gave a more in-depth insight of the topic.

Personally, I think mythos and folklore always provide some hidden insight into any occult theme, so I always assume there is some hidden truth in plain sight in them. When it comes to vampirism, I also believe there is some truth, since even before «Carmilla» and «Dracula» there were multiple tales of vampires (or strigoi) across the globe, with some common traits among them. Now, this is perhaps me, but when I see subjects in different continents and yet arrive at similar outcomes, I cannot deny there is something there. And the common theme I read in these folk tales was about draining energy (or vitality), enchantment, and connections to necromancy (either by being an undead or one who masters necromancy arts). So, I assume those who tap into this art must somehow embody this same school. But I am just conjuring, based on intuition and cross-referenced information I had read.
