I am new to Western Mysticism. What magick practice did you start with and why? And what form of magick practice you do now?

Hard question to answer because it is very subjective. Personally, I started with both the Golden Dawn and the Gallery of Magick. I found stuff like the LBRP and practical magick to be quite effective in getting me hooked on magick in generally. But you really need to look over what is available in order to see what gels with you properly. Not every magical system is a one size fit all for everyone and there are many to choose from, even within the western mystery tradition overall.

But if you were to choose something, I would start with something meditative first. Being able to train your mind for magick will be helpful no matter which magical system you choose. Most magical systems do have a meditative component to it, but I think those parts are usually quite shallow in most parts. So getting deep into meditation, especially something like Buddhist meditation or Raja yoga, is a great way to get started. Then you can pick your own magical system based on what you like.

But if you had to choose something from the western side, then I would either choose something like Initiation into Hermetics (IIH) or even Chaos Magick. I practise IIH and have spent a lot of time getting to know the system. It is comprehensive, has a good meditative component, and is an excellent compliment to any magical practice. It is fairly non-dogmatic from a religious standpoint, but it still fits quite well into an Abrahamic framework if that is your thing.

Chaos magick is even less dogmatic and I think would teach you a great amount of fundamentals that are common to many magical systems. It is the bare bones of any magical system and it will give you great understanding into magick in general. A book like "Condensed Chaos" or Liber Null will be a great introduction into this.

But again, read around and explore. See what you agree with the most and take that as your chosen practice. You cannot pigeonhole things that don't work for you.

I recommend starting small and gradually developing your skills.

Develop visualization, grounding, protection, and even meditation to help you. Cast simple, easy spells—whether they are witchcraft, Hoodoo, or traditional rural arts like Appalachian magick. These methods work well on their own and also help build the confidence and skills needed to perform more challenging rituals if you choose to pursue them.

@dzb10035 mentioned Chaos Magick, which is an excellent system to explore.

Additionally, begin reading or studying topics like astrology, herbalism, and correspondences, but feel free to pursue anything that sparks your interest.

Just practicing those areas will open up many paths in the occult that can naturally intrigue you.

You asked what forms of magic we do... this is most of mine. Well-designed, simple spells are my preference.

Thank you so much guys! I have a background in tibetan buddhism, but Ive had a calling past year to western mysticism. So this transition is interesting to see the similarities in practice some of these magick systems have.

I began with demonolatry and then expanded to include angels, and chaos magick. I'd also like to work with pagan deities in the future. Now I mostly follow my intuition on what kind of spirit to contact for the work at hand. Servitors are the kind of spirit I work with the most at the moment.

I started with Chaos Magick, though I think it's better to start with something that's a little more structured. You already posted about Quareia elsewhere on here and I think that is a very good choice to get the fundamentals of western magic right.

Though, if you want something that's more "I just want to do something now and read the theory later", I see a lot of people being brought in via the 40 Servants system. You get both a magical system that doesn't require too much effort at first and a divination system to go with it. I consider it a kind of step-up from basic Chaos Magick.

The path is within you, follow your intrinsic drive, your curiosity. One step leads to the next, priorities may change.

Today's occult market is filled with countless ideas and concepts, most of it is based on the original stuff, so orientation is hard until you see the structures. The first question for self-orientation is "What do you want to achieve?".

Start with reading the Sefer Yetzirah - every western system is based on it as it explains Christs language (referenced in revelations as the tree of life (GRA)). Then read the Torah and look at the letters in Hebrew but from the lens of infinite love or if not at that level, unconditional love, it will help you connect with Christ. Then you can do a physical practice like Ophanim Yoga and include works like IIH, Qi gong, Yoga or whatever you feel called to. The Sefer Yetzirah and Tao Te Ching are a very powerful set that work well together. Of course if you want more of the other stuff, follow your heart, remember its all love at its core and have fun. You'll love the adventure!
