For one reason or another, I've come to at the very least be interested, if not outright believe, in the occult. I would like to know what a good starting point would be for a complete beginner, if that is possible.

Personal recommendations for starting vary.
The suitability of a starting recommendation being directly related to how much information about interests and previous experiences are given for consideration. If little is given, expect as much personal suitability. There isn't a one book for all to start with.
When independent study is strong and spirits are an interest then something like The Book of Babalon to prompt investigation. It's the type of book to foster familiarization from the paths it offers forward and back in occult history to look into.
If independent study is weak and there'd be an expectation by the newbie for someone else to do their thinking for them with no recompense, then some kind of encyclopedic introduction like Man, Myth and Magic.
