If the devil runs this world, I pity him more than Lucifer in the book. But let me elaborate further on my fascination with The Club Dumas.

One of the major narratives of this novel is about the blonde girl (like in the movie). It is made clear that she is Lucifer after the failed rebellion against the mighty G-O-D and the consequent fall from Heaven. She is depicted solely as a fallen angel deprived of all her powers for she is no longer a divine servant. Banished into exile, she is still immortal, like her fellow rebels (Belial runs a horse range!), and condemned to walk among the mortals until the end of days.

As she tells the main protagonist she started the rebellion in favor to mankind, the exact reason is not explained. She still holds quite some affection toward mankind and is studying their culture, especially literature, and from time to time she falls in love with a person. But she is estranged by the attempts of magicians to summon her. Therefore my quote from the first post.

As I said, she is portrayed as a powerless and tragic figure who cannot grant powers for she is bereaved of hers (she does not even have bank account I presume!). I very much like this idea. The movie fails in this regard but has essentially a complete different twist of its own and takes some completely different directions. While reading the book, I was surprised by all the changes that have been actually made.

There's a little known vampire movie on Amazon Video that has interesting references to Alchemy in it, enough to make me believe the scriptwriter knew what she was talking about. It's called The Old Blood: Flamel's Legacy staring Sam Terry.

One of the main characters is in fact Perenelle Flamel, the historical Alchemist's wife. In the movie, she's found the secret to extending life and started her own little coven of artificially preserved vampires.

As someone who was a young kid in the 80s (and to mention films I haven't yet seen brought up), I loved Vibes, Teen Witch, and Bell, Book, and Candle.

Some others not mentioned (unless I missed seeing them) that I enjoy are Ghost, Odd Thomas, The Frighteners, Deadtectives, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service (well, many Ghibli films have magical elements but those are my favorite 3). I love classic Universal Monsters in general but I do also like the '99 The Mummy and the 2010 The Wolfman.

Ghibli films
Great, I love them! Good example for Japanese movies. Actually, Princess Mononoke exquisitely displays the origin of a curse through suffering and how it can be spread by contact, similar to the Ju-On movies.

Some more favorite movies with occult references came to my mind.

Addams Family Values (1993)
"I'm just like any modern woman trying to have it all. Loving husband, a family. It's just, I wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade."

Nosferatu (2024)
There were many mixed receptions, but I love this movie wholeheartedly, especially because of the occult references in it. Count Orlok is portrayed as a Solomonar, a storm sorcerer of Slavic folklore. In legend the Solomonari are in league in with the Devil who taught them magic, they ride dragons, control the weather and reach immortality by becoming vampires or Strigois.

And OMG, the role of Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz, the movie's version of Van Helsing! He is a student of alchemy, he mentions Agrippa and Paracelsus. In one scene he is downtrodden because - once again - Hermes did not appear before him to offer him the secret for the creation of gold. And his first name is a hint to Albin Grau, the art director of the original Nosferatu. Grau was a German occultist, member of the Pansophian Society and the Fraternitas Saturni, and he did a documentary about Aleister Crowleys visit in Germany.

The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
Here I had to chuckle. I mean, my profile pic and my user name are both from the movie but I forgot about it in my first post here. In the novel Daryl Van Horne ("I'm just your average horny little devil") is a warlock, in the movie they made him the one Devil himself to have a little more drama, I guess and of course, it's fitting the theme of a witches coven quite well. The movie is mostly funny but has some quite dark scenes in it showing "black" magic. The scene where the figure of Felicia Alden - already driven insane by the evil presence in town - is getting bewitched and starts vomiting cherry stones is pretty intense.

I love when he says, "I had nearly unlocked the final key of the Mysteriorum Libri Quinque of our blesséd Johannus Dee" in his opening scene!

I really love so many of Ghibli's films, but there's so much in Princess Mononoke that I absolutely love. I feel like that also depicts more of how I connect with and appreciate nature, too. I do tend to watch Howl's Moving Castle more because, despite some of the story elements, overall for me I feel like it's less heavy of a story compared to Princess Mononoke so it's easier for me to rewatch more frequently. Plus I do like Sophie and Calcifer, haha.

I'm a huge Addams Family fan as well, but I actually haven't seen that fan theory! Thanks for sharing it!

I love silent films and the original Nosferatu, so I must admit that I haven't watched this one yet. But now I am a bit more curious and will add it to my list to see.

Oh, I haven't thought of Witches of Eastwick in years! I haven't read the book (though I've planned to eventually), but it's been so many years since I saw it that I'll have to rewatch it sometime as well
