I'll write these down here whenever they come to mind, and I'd love for you guys to share yours as well—the personal habits and tendencies of each demon.

I'll start:

Ronove tends to work through people. When he wants to ruin someone's life, he doesn't necessarily do it by simply placing a curse or depression on them; instead, he cuts them off from the people around them, ruins their network.

Likewise, when he wants to bring something to someone, he often does it by manipulating their relationships with other people. He brings things to a result and then leaves it there.

What this means is that, unless you specifically ask otherwise, once the person you want reaches out to you, whatever happens from that point onward is between you and your target.

Astaroth tends to take what you say quite literally, so using exaggerations when speaking to him may not always produce the results you want.

For example, suppose you want X to fall in love with you. If you say, “I want this person to fall so deeply in love with me that they become my lifelong pet,” that kind of wording might be used in certain spells, so why not? But if you explain your desire to him literally in those terms, he will refuse it.

The reason is that he will actually consider the possibility of the target staying with you for the rest of their life, recognize that this could be harmful to you, and decide not to carry it out.

Rosier rarely makes use of his own power directly. For example, if you ask him for a chant to obtain a certain power, once you specify your intention, what he gives you will often be a chant belonging to another demon.

Likewise, when you ask him for something, or when he sees that you need something, he will often bring another demon or entity known for handling that particular matter.

This can also put you in some pretty confusing situations.

I'm not sure what are you actually working with that answers to "Astaroth", but being harmful to you is not exactly something that would concern a fully realised demon. Usually the opposite, I reckon.

It's very much a matter of giving you what you want to. If you treat him as a tool, he'll behave like a tool as well, simply to keep the interaction with you going. At that point, what's good or what's bad is essentially meaningless to him. Or if you see him as an evil spirit, as some kind of hostile entity, he won't bother trying to prove himself to you. Your interaction with him is limited at that point, so he'll simply look at how he can benefit from the situation the most. if you experienced "fully realized demons" like that, that's the reason for that probably.

Since apparently we're being patronising now: it is a great pride and naivety of many magicians that all malice in the cosmos comes from one's own will. You might use the names of demons for all kinds of spiritual structures, but the unconscious mind is made of centuries of culture that don't recognise your soverignity.

Weren’t you the one who said demons consume people bit by bit? Why are you bringing up the conscious vs. unconscious mind? You’re just arguing for the sake of arguing, oh exalted one. Please don’t derail the topic and leave. Every piece of information I’ve shared is the collective output of three experienced people who are completely unaware of what the others are doing.

It seems these traits of / experiences with the demons are subjective and opinion.
There's no need for either one of you to argue about that.

My issue wasn’t that he was talking about experiences; it was that they was talking simply because he could. simply annoying. anyways

A good thread. Alongside the personal gnosis, it's worth remembering that several of these "habits" are already written into the primary sources — the old grimoires give many of the 72 a documented temperament, and in a few cases very specific cautions. Keeping the two layers apart (what the text attests vs. what you personally experience) saves a lot of confusion.

A few that are actually on the page:

Ronove — the textual spine behind the "he works through people" impression is right there in his office: the Ars Goetia and Weyer give him "the favour of friends and of foes," together with rhetoric, tongues and good servants. His documented lane is relationships and standing, not brute force — so that experience has a source.

Amon — "reconciles controversies between friends, and among foes," and procures love. Another relationship-worker in the record, not a curse-thrower.

Phenex — the charm is the hazard, and the text says so: he sings "with a sweet voice," and the operator is warned not to be moved by it but to make him take human shape first. Weyer even extends the warning to the companions present, not just to the magician.

Asmodeus — the most protocol-bound entry in the whole book: you must call him standing and bare-headed, "for if the exorcist have his head covered, Amaymon (under whose power he is) will deceive him." A documented behavioural condition, centuries before any modern framework.

None of this contradicts anyone's practice — it just marks which part is old and attested and which part is yours.

Three? Okay, that's settled then.

My lived experience, since you're interested, with demons in general (as is the experience of my whole congregation) is that they are first of all expert liars. They will behave and appear aligned in any way that will compel you to "work" with them, up to and beyond slipping you ineffective binding or banishing rituals and then consistently pretending they work. And they act slowly and covertly, not always by spreading some noticable "bad energy", harming people in ways they don't even know they can be harmed.

I brought up unconscious mind because when you're summoning a demon you're not just getting what cool, revisionist idea about them you have in your consciousness, but also what your unconscious mind, grown out of generations of culture thinks them to be.
