There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution here, and the answer is honestly that "it depends". As a baseline for most known spirits, an attitude of respect is the baseline. However, respect can range from "respectful authoritative" to worship and devotion. It is this spectrum which requires you to do further research on the spirits that you are dealing with.
An example where "respect" is flexible is seen with the demons from the grimoires. The attitude can be downright commanding and coercive as seen in the usual Solomonic magical approaches. In other cases, the attitude can be more as authoritative, yet respectful as seen in the GV. Then you have traditions such as demonolatry which is basically worship of demons and includes a heavy amount of devotional work. And in all of these cases, the magick works with the spirits. There is a lot of debate as to which approach is more effective, but I have heard of results being accomplished with all these examples.
Another example is the Lwa / Loa. I don't know a ton about the ATRs in general, but from the legit sources that I can read, the Lwa require a respectful attitude that is much closer to devotion and worship. One could say communion is the correct word to use here. But generally, the impression is that you would not want to try and command / coerce these spirits otherwise bad shit could happen very quickly. I would even argue that treating them as equals wouldn't get you very far.
So the long answer is that it depends. You need to do research into the traditions and literature surrounding the spirits. There is a reason that history and culture are so important when trying to approach a spirit and often these clues are key on the attitude that is needed. But often the attitudes tend to converge on being respectful and polite to the spirit (though not necessarily supplicating). You would find the attitude that Jason Miller has is a good one to cultivate for a general rule of thumb, but specific research is always needed.
Note, there is an exception in this baseline. There are certain spirits that are regarded as being quite close to "objectively" malicious and harmful. Spirits such as Enochian Cacodemons, trickster spirits, and parasites all fit into this equation and therefore a forceful commanding approach cna be used with them. But in general, among the named spirits we can work with, respect will go a long way combined with targeted research.
